We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordyne Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jordyne, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I came up with the idea of Trap Cuisines due to losing my job in 2017! I had lost my job, lived in a condo in las Colinas, running out of funds in my savings account. I always had people ask me to sell them a plate or make a plate when i posted my food on Facebook or IG. I decided to do a test run on a plate of spaghetti, corn and salad. I Sold 29 Plates! I figured i could do it again, just something different. I sold plates all that weekend. I made the amount for my rent and more. Once i realized that i actually enjoyed letting people taste my food, getting the comments and people telling me how good it was, that’s when i actually went and got a notebook and started to jot down different meals i could sell. I didn’t make up my name until the middle of 2018 lol! I figured since i was selling plates out the house i was “trapping” haha, but my food also sparked cause of the presentation and i loved to do sauces, so i added on “Cuisines”. Ever since the name has rung a bell.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a personal chef, and caterer! The rode to my journey was simple and hard at the same time. I say simple because due to life outside of Facebook/IG and social media popularity i was able to promote less due to word of mouth, i say hard because actually trying to stay motivated as a chef comes a tad bit rough! You have competition everywhere! Having to make your food stand out from 50 other cooks in your city with presentation, taste, spices, you have to stay on your toes! Always making changes, always adding new dishes to the menu. Working a full time job, and trying to do my business is always a juggle!
I’ve learned throughout my business journey is you have to find ways to keep yourself motivated! You just have to keep pushing! Be original! What works for that chef may not work for you!
I not only want the world to know, i need the world to know that my brand is the best thing I’ve ever accomplished, it’s not easy finding the skills, the mindset, the personality to start a business from the ground and make it something successful! Especially without a business partner, a influencer, just me, in the living room with a notebook!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Fiancé & my mom!
If it wasn’t for my fiancé pushing me and boosting my confidence on my business then i would’ve fell short of the “overwhelmed entrepreneurship”. He owns a Barbershop so he’s more untuned with the “business mentality” and i use him as a mentor he’s my biggest support system.
If it wasn’t for my Mom, being a chef herself and watching her go from being a cook in a night club, to a Chef at the Omni, then opening up her a kitchen, showing the world that things can be done with starting low i wouldn’t have even turned to cooking to make money. She helped me with my very first catering, i can remember how lost i was when it came to converting from selling plates to catering!
