We had the good fortune of connecting with JoJo DiSalvo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi JoJo, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My original intent behind playing music was not to be a business. Just starting, as a young musician, I always consider it a hobby. I didn’t change my mindset until I started making money and realized that it was a viable career path. That changed my mindset and the way that I operated. So my thought process was “If this is something I’m passionate about, I have to turn it into something sustainable.” That’s when I went into business mode and started operating from that mindset.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am really proud of my growth. When I was 19, I had never picked up a guitar. I sang in church as a kid but quit singing when I turned nine. When I was older and figuring out what I wanted to do with my life, I decided instead of wasting my time I would learn a skill. I had an old $5 garage sale guitar that my grandpa bought me. I practiced every single day for a few hours and used some unconventional methods to learn a little bit quicker. Pretty soon after I was writing my first songs and matching them up with the music I was playing on the guitar. It became the thing that consumed most of my time and I realized that it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

I’m excited for my upcoming projects. I’ve been working hard on crafting songs that hold to the, “three chords and the truth,” ideology of country music, while remaining on the edge of multiple genres to appeal to all. I really enjoy using my music as a metric to see where I was and how far I’ve come.

It has been a long, hard journey. Every failure every success has been a huge lesson and I’m thankful for it all. If you had to break it down, I would say that the music industry is about 20% talent and 80% hard work. Along those same lines I would say that it’s 20% playing music and 80% branding, booking, networking, and all the other things that you don’t sign up for when you wanna play music for a living. I’ve learned a lot and I’m learning every single day but I’m grateful that I get to call this my career!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The stockyards is a must! It’s one of my favorite places to hang out and show people a little bit of Texas. There’s nothing like a Rangers game at the new Globe Life field. For all my musical needs, Tone Shop Guitars is the best! It’s the largest custom Martin Guitar dealer in the world, and they make any musician feel welcome.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
To my wonderful family for being the most supportive and loving through my journey.
