We had the good fortune of connecting with Johnathon Lavigne-Reese and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Johnathon, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started up my business as just a music production company at first. I wanted to be a place recording artist could come in with complete creative freedom of their art piece. So I started thinking, why should this just be for music, there are artists everywhere looking for a place to just be creative. That’s what I want to provide. Somewhere you can make your art your way without all the contracts and soul selling. A place open to painters and artists to come in and have the tools available to push them further in their skills. A place that won’t charge tattoo artists 65% of what they make for each piece done. I want to be a place to where people can collect and be in an environment that pushes them to be the best artist they can be, no matter the canvas.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art, as it is for many artists, has changed over the years. It all started with a wide-eyed dream to become a rock star. Naturally, it’s never that simple. During the making of my first album my producer’s studio unexpectedly closed down, and with the deadline staring me in the face, I took the production knowledge I had gained and finished the album myself. Being a self-produced artist is something I really enjoy now, and has given me the opportunity to produce other musician’s music as well. Now of days, JLR Music and Productions keeps that same mindset creating almost all of the art we publish 100% by ourselves. Whenever a project requires something new, we would rather learn than outsource. That’s helped us widen the services we offer to others, and helped me as an independent artist to accomplish a more well-rounded image. My second release, 5 MORE MINUTES (to be released September 5th, 2022), really personifies this. While I’ve spent the past few months learning new skills and production techniques for my sound, the wonderful team at JLR Music and Productions was busy learning animation, digital art, and filming. We’re very happy with how this full scale art project has come together, and I hope my listeners can see the creativity everyone involved wove into it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love skateboarding down downtown Dallas at night with my wife, the lights are beautiful and the atmosphere is very surreal. I also really love White Rock Lake, i used to visit as a child with my grandfather all the time, so it will always hold a place in my heart.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people who have helped me through my journey. For starters Kathleen Smith and Dennis Strickland, they aren’t with us anymore, but their love and support is one of the driving factors for me ever starting my music and art in the first place. To this day they continue to drive me and encourage me. Also my grandfather, it hasn’t been an easy road to get here, so he would always remind me to “Stay Grounded” in everything I do. That remains the slogan for all of my projects.
Of course my wife, who serves as my publicist, marketer, photographer, supporter, and everything else I could possible need.
