We had the good fortune of connecting with John Gallegos and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi John, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
The most important decision I made was actually a realization called “Sonder”.
Sonder: “The profound awareness that each person, even those you don’t know, has their own full and rich life, with their own ambitions, friends, routines, and struggles”. American author David Foster Wallace’s famous 2005 “This is Water” commencement speech perfectly encapsulates it. It led me to the realization that my life isn’t about me. My life is about everyone in it and how I fit into theirs and vice versa. Every time we make salsa and send it out into the wild for the world to discover and enjoy, we’re sharing some of the beautiful things about ourselves that make life enjoyable and lessens human suffering in the process and that’s not what success is about… That’s what a life well lived and realized is about.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
For the better part of my young adult life I cut my teeth working in the wireless telecommunication industry. I was part of the generation that was tasked w/ the monumental job of converting the masses from flip phones to the smartphones people continue using today and you’re probably viewing any of this on right now. So, guilty as charged, lol. As a result, I gained a heavy background in sales and more importantly a customer facing environment. Being an introverted person it was a bit harder for me to do but once I realized it was really about meeting people’s needs that’s when things started to click. It took me a long way until covid hit and the economy tanked. This eventually prompted me to venture out solo and start what everyone now knows as Johnny G’s Salsa Co. I took all those years of sales and relied on it in order to build the value in what we do and how we do it now. I had originally gone to college for music at Texas Tech Universaity so I was always a creative but finding a way to combine my sales skills and creativity took a while until starting our Salsa Co. With Johnny G’s, I was able to be creative, use my business skills AND provide something honest and useful to the world in the form of handcrafted, top-tier salsa. So, the Johnny G’s story is really about survival and putting your best foot forward in any given situation while giving our customers the best tasting salsa experience in the process.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It’s funny that you mention it because we JUST did this a few weeks back. In no particular order, I’d hit up the Dallas World Aquarium, Klyde Park, a concert/festival at the American Airlines arena and/or hit Deep Ellum that same evening. Being the motorsports fan that I am, I’d probably also take them to Texas Motor Speedway, Eagles Canyon or any given autocross even in the DFW area if they were too and then probably a nice relaxing cookout back out my casa in beautiful Denton, Tx. that night to decompress/talk about the day’s events. I’m a simple guy like that, lol.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife & kiddos. Without them, the desire & focus would’ve been much harder to achieve what we’ve been doing so far. In addition, they’ve also kept me grounded by highlighting what’s most important in the end: Putting our best foot forward and valuing the inevitable connections with others that’ll produce along the way. It takes a village!
