We had the good fortune of connecting with John Chavers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi John, what matters most to you?
The Golden Rule is a very important principle to me: “To treat others as one would like to be treated”. I like to be treated kindly, and, thus, I believe that all people should be treated likewise. There is already too much hate and difficulty in the world without adding mistreatment to that equation. Why can’t we all just get along, right? John Lennon penned the phrase, “All we need is love”. Maybe he was on to something?
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am an electronic musician who uses synthesizers and drum machines to create intuitive sounds and rhythms. I grew up in the 80’s, so my influences include groups, such as, Depeche Mode, Erasure, and Yaz. I believe my music differs from many other modern electronic artists because I use no computers to create my sound. Each piece of equipment that I use is an instrument in, and of, itself (see the pics). This type of setup gives me more freedom on stage because I am not confined to what has been recorded on the computer, but can tweak the sounds as I go. Incidentally, I do play other instruments such as the guitar and piano, but it is the variability of the synthesizers and machines that allow me the most fun and enjoyment.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I were to schedule a week long visit, it would look like this: Monday morning would take us to the Avoca Coffee Shop on Magnolia Street for a choice of great teas, coffee, or other fine drinks that they offer. We would then venture deeper into the heart of Fort Worth and visit some local fine art museums, such as, The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. After the museums, since we would be near Trinity Park, we could take a stroll through the park, hop on the little train that runs through the park (I’ve always loved that little train), and then visit the Japanese Gardens across the street. That evening we might meet at the Bearded Lady on Main Street, for a nice, tasty cheeseburger and fries. Tuesday would take us to Cedar Hill State Park, where we could get lost in the many beautiful hiking trails they have to offer. And since we would already be there, we might as well conclude the evening by setting up tents in one of the scenic campsites they offer, roasting some marshmallows over an open fire and singing songs to the guitar. Wednesday would take us thrift store and vintage store shopping. Maybe we could even stop by Doc’s and check out the the Album collection and Vintage clothes they have for sale throughout the warehouse. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday would take us to the many Live Music Venues they have throughout the DFW area. Caves and Dr. Jeckyll’s in the Arlington Area; Deep Ellum in Dallas; Dickies Arena or The Stockyards in Fort Worth (make sure to bring your boots). Finally, Sunday morning would take us to church (Hopefully we didn’t get too careless the night before). Southcliff Church and 7 city Church are my favorites.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Family. My successes can be directly linked to my family. To begin with, my Mother has always been there to encourage, support, and love me. She has been influential in helping me to succeed in life (and in music). Secondly, my brother, Jeff. Being a musician himself, he is very smart and helpful and has always been an inspiration to me. Next, my Daughter, Faith. She is just a wonderful person. She inspires me to be original and to play the kind of music that really brings me joy. She is always there to whisper a vote of confidence to me and to encourage me to keep going. Finally, the newest edition to the family, is my son-in-law, Kasey. He is the helpful observer, who gives meaningful insight to what he sees and hears. At my shows, for instance, I can always trust that he’ll give me an honest opinion of “what worked” on stage. I love all these people dearly and, admittedly, they are my greatest blessing.
