We had the good fortune of connecting with Joey Myers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joey, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve been very lucky, and happy, to have worked in a variety of fields; learning many things from each place and person. At some point I decided to go freelance and use all of those skills that I have picked up in order to do things that challenge me creatively but also allow me to help my own clients and develop further.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Artistically I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t doing something creative either digitally or traditionally. I’m mostly excited to use my art to help others understand complex topics ranging from history, and science to sexuality, gender identity and beyond. Although professionally I use a separate set of skills (illustration and graphic design) to help others organize, layout, and beautify their content to better connect with or catch the attention of their audiences. Neither art or graphic design have been extremely easy as both require constant practice, and an output of work, but I love it. The challenges never stop coming but with those hurdles come more knowledge and better understanding of what it takes to being a great creative professional.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Hahaha! You ask that like I’ve never had my friend visit! Would definitely be some museum visits to the Perot, or DMA maybe some we haven’t tried yet. A trip to the Deep Ellum art or most definitely some Texas renaissance festival visits, depending on what’s going on at the time… but considering the Corona Pandemic we don’t mind spending the time online drawing silly things together.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many influences from video games, music, famous artists, scientists, and more but none are as personally helpful than those closest to me. Friends and family have always been there and kept it real. They’ve provided guidance, advice, criticism even a few high fives along the way. Thank you!
