We had the good fortune of connecting with Joey Owens and Justin Casey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joey & Justin, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
Musicians need to tour / constantly gig to achieve success.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We are a rock-n-roll duo with a sound that hearkens back to 60s and 70s garage rock and punk. A major difference in our workflow is that we collaborate entirely remotely. We live about 125 miles apart and do all of the songwriting and recording in our respective home studios. As far as we can tell, it seems fairly uncommon for rock bands to work this way and yield results that still sound like a couple of guys playing music together. Part of the reason we have such strong musical chemistry is due to a working relationship that dates back to 2005. It’s a source of pride that we were able to move our established skills out of the practice room and instead collaborate over cloud drives and Zoom meetings so seamlessly.
So far, we’ve released two singles “Lemonade” and “Bad Connections” which are available to stream and download everywhere. Getting to this point has taken dedication, but hasn’t been tremendously difficult. We are driven by passion and thrive on motivation. Fortunately, we also entered the project with a relaxed mindset, so if either of us are having personal issues, it’s not hard to pick things up next week where we left off. One thing we’ve learned from working in this way is that creating music can be simpler with more satisfying results in a quiet, focused environment. Oftentimes, with a full band is trying to find a middle ground with so many people contributing.
We are Market Zero, and while we make music for ourselves. we love our fans! Knowing that we are creating something that people love is incredibly rewarding.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’ve always been partial to the venues and nightlife Deep Ellum, though with the pandemic and personal issues, getting out there has not been as easy for us as it once was. For food, you’d be hard pressed to find a better cheesesteak in D/FW than you can find at The Truck Yard.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We definitely have our families to thank, both of which planted strong musical roots into us at early ages. And there’s been so much support along the way from fans (who we love to hear from!) as well as media figures like Veronica Young, who has featured us prominently on her podcast “The Veronica Young Show”. Of course, the crew at 9.17 KXT like Nilifur Arsala and Amy Miller deserve a shoutout for all times they’ve spun our two singles. It’s really put our music into a lot of ears that never would have heard it otherwise. Another name we want to mention is Stevan Hass, who is an avid local music supporter, and also runs Hass Productions, a pretty cool graphic design and printing company that we partner with regularly. Our superfan, Katie Bennett needs a personal shoutout for the moral support, inspiration, and more. Also, wanted to give a big thanks Michael Zamora for not only supporting us, but also suggesting us for this interview!

Amazing article. I would say that in your own business, you are your own boss. You must be willing to make the decisions and live with the consequences. This is an important point to keep in mind because you will have to take responsibility for your actions.
