We had the good fortune of connecting with Jo Lam and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jo, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?

Project Beauty, a nonprofit founded in 2019, is a transformative force for survivors of sex trafficking and domestic violence in the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area. Serving 10 shelters and safe houses across DFW, our focus extends beyond traditional beauty services.

We provide complimentary beauty services such as haircuts and facials, but our commitment goes further. For survivors who have been physically disfigured by past abusers, we offer restorative services including tattoo removal and scar revisions in our Angel Clinic Program.  This approach allows survivors to reclaim their bodies and rebuild self confidence.

Since our inception, Project Beauty has been a beacon of empowerment, illuminating the path towards healing and resilience for thousands of women in our community. Our unwavering belief in the transformative power of beauty and self-care sets us apart, making a lasting impact on the lives of those who have experienced trauma.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Project Beauty isn’t just an organization—it’s a living, breathing testament to the incredible things that happen when you turn pain into power. Being a survivor myself, I saw a gap that needed filling, a space where a nonprofit could focus solely on healing through the lens of beauty. In a world where such initiatives are rare, we, at Project Beauty, are carving out our own path, especially through our unique Angel Clinic.

Our Angel Clinic is like a safe haven, offering services like tattoo removal and scar revisions that go beyond the surface. It’s not just about physical change; it’s about a deep, soulful healing that words struggle to capture.

Building something meaningful from scratch is no walk in the park. I had to dive headfirst into the world of running a nonprofit, and truth be told, I’m still figuring it out. The journey of learning never really stops, and that’s okay. Mistakes are part of the deal, and we’re learning to embrace them as stepping stones, not stumbling blocks.

Through all the ups and downs, my spiritual foundation is what keeps me grounded. Knowing that my purpose is bigger than any obstacle gives me the strength to keep going. I firmly believe I’m here for a reason, and the story of Project Beauty is here to show other women that they, too, have the strength to keep pushing forward. It’s not just a project; it’s a source of inspiration for anyone who needs a reminder that their strength is boundless.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So many amazing places to check out! If you’re up for it, we could hit some fantastic hiking trails and parks around DFW. Cedar Ridge Preserves is my absolute go-to; the views are just breathtaking! Another spot you can’t miss is Klyde Warren Park – it has a great lively vibe that’s infectious. And hey, while we’re at Klyde Warren, the Dallas Museum of Art is totally worth a peek!

Now, let’s talk food. I’m a total foodie, and there’s no way we’re missing out on the local gems, from those cozy mom-and-pop joints in South Dallas to the trendy spots up in Uptown. The food scene around DFW is a whole adventure in itself, offering endless choices for every taste bud. Right now, I’m all about Korean cuisine – so good, you’ve gotta try it!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
An organization I want to recognize is United Way Metropolitan of Dallas, for selecting us to be part of their Social Innovation Program! I also want to thank Salon Boutique Academy in Addison for supporting us and believing in us since day 1
