We had the good fortune of connecting with Jill Miller & Jamie Harrison and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jill & Jamie, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking is a part of dreaming. When you have a dream placed on your heart, it usually involves risk and sacrifice to help it flourish. It might be risking income or sacrificing time, but no matter what, to build a dream, you have to take risks. Risks are what set you apart from others chasing after dreams. When people play it safe at every turn, they might get somewhere, but they won’t stand out. We’ve realized that to capture people’s attention, you have to think outside the box and be willing to fail. Along with that, being transparent lets people know you’re real and you’re trying. It’s important not to be overly impulsive when taking risks, though. Knowing the consequences and assessing each situation is responsible. It’s whether or not you choose to take the leap that sets you apart.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Teacher, Be Still was built out of a need that we saw staring us in the face every single day at work. Educators wear themselves out at every turn, and they have a very hard time sticking up for themselves. For the most part, they have a really hard time managing their time outside of school because their plate is never empty. We decided to try to do something about it by launching a conference in Summer 2019. It was an instant hit, and the feedback we received was overwhelming. We knew that this was a serious need in the educator community, and we were so ready to take it on. As a company, Teacher, Be Still exists to encourage all kinds of educators – public, private, home school, road school – in their pursuit of spiritual, physical, and mental health. We want to be a resource, a source of inspiration, and a voice for them when they feel they have none. We hear, “Thank you for speaking up for us.” all the time. It’s time educators start loving themselves are realizing their value lies far beyond the walls of the classroom.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Dallas/Fort Worth is FILLED with so many things to do! We love Downtown Fort Worth “Funkytown” as it’s filled with the arts, incredible food and local breweries, and trail systems with bike rentals scattered throughout the city. It’s laid back vibe make it an awesome day trip for the whole family because there’s something for everyone! Head up north to Downtown Denton on the Square. Situated in the heart of a college town, you can always find super cool street music and quaint restaurants and coffee bars. Downtown Dallas has really upped their game with the Trinity River District. Ropes courses, horse back riding, scenic bridges, trails, and incredible food make this a new, trendy hang out in the heart of Dallas.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Ummm – like everyone we know! Seriously- we’ve been so blessed with an ARMY of people that have encouraged us, supported us, shown up at events, given so much time, and prayed over us at every turn. Our husbands have been our rocks and a part of every decision we’ve made. They’ve put up with many late night zoom meetings, crazy schedules, and they’ve held down income so we could chase this dream. Our families, especially our moms have championed us every step of the way. If we put a post or an article out there, you can be sure the 2 Sandras have liked it! Our small group and closest friends, and all of our local teachers have been the absolute foundation of Teacher, Be Still! They were our first volunteer team and our first audience, and we are beyond grateful for each one of them!
