We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Gutierrez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
My favorite affirmation since I can remember and will always be, “My strength is greater than any struggle.” As cliche as it may be it definitely is up to me to decide if I will let my struggles and weaknesses determine my success. As humans we pick our own battles and honestly it is up to us to either stay in the ground or get up and build our empire.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been working in retail ever since I graduated high school specifically in pharmaceuticals. I then thought I wanted to work in healthcare and become a pharmacist. I started to take my prerequisites to reach that goal in my community college but as time went by I felt unmotivated. I realized I didn’t want that for me. For as much as I thought I wanted to be a healthcare worker and honestly a huge shoutout to those that do! I noticed that wasn’t my purpose. I am still currently working in this field due to finding a position that accommodated my work to life schedule and balances with me returning back to school to earn my bachelors degree in Business Management. It all shifted during the pandemic when I was still working while a lot of people got to stay home and the famous social media platform “tiktok” became the talk of the hour appeared and I would see a lot of people making chocolate covered treats. That’s when something sparked in me and I said, “ wait I’ve done this before”! I use to make arrangements for Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day way before it became something. Although my techniques weren’t amazing I thought why not! Why not make try it? I remember it was the end of September and after giving it to much thought during the summer and talking to my sister in law Sonia who is also one of the people that motivated me to go for it and sell my treats that I then started something new. On October 4th, 2020 I was ready and set to promote my new small business. I had already created my logo, made my first collection of treats to promote which were chocolate covered Oreos with a Halloween inspired theme due to spooky season being nearby. I then created my Instagram account and started promoting it on my personal account and surely close friends and family started to follow and reach out! Honestly they were all my biggest supporters! I rapidly started having a handful of orders and I had to grow my menu! As the holidays approached I got more and more creative with my menu and started offering different desserts. Now two years have gone by and although I haven’t made it full time yet my clientele has grown and my techniques have evolved as well. Petalpinksweets has become my brand and I now offer a variety of options. From chocolate covered treats edible and floral arrangements as well. I definitely discovered that I indeed did have a creative side. As my business expands and I get more recognition I appreciate every single person who shares what I do and recommends me. I hope to one day be able to take that extra leap and make it my full time career but as of now only time will tell.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
From all the places to choose from I definitely have my top favorite! Starting off with a nice morning walk/hike at the Cedar Ridge preserve. Later following with some good breakfast at First watch! They have the best blueberry pancakes! We can’t go wrong with Pluckers Wing bar for lunch where the hot buffalo wings are my favorite followed with a nice cold Batman! For as much as I enjoy the Indoors but not as much as I enjoy sitting in a patio drinking a nice frozen Margarita which would definitely be at Primos Tex-Mex Grille in garland for a nice scenic view of the lake! We would probably go there everyday for dinner since they have amazing queso and my favorite chicken chimichangas. For a little night of fun I enjoy going to Vidorra in Addison and dance the night away. Or The Pub in Plano for a more chill night. Afterwards you can never go wrong with some delicious tacos from Tacos La Banqueta puro DF in Dallas. There are also many activities that I would do throughout the week like a enjoy a Rangers game at the new Rangers stadium. Or go for a fall walk to the Dallas Arboretum.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to recognize my husband Miguel Gutierrez. Not only is he my life partner, he is also my number one supporter. He encourages me to always go for what I want and helps me in every step of the way. He is my silent business partner as I would call it because he makes deliveries with me, makes those last minute unprepared quick grocery store runs for me, and ultimately always standing by my side telling me I can do it all!
