Meet Jesse Garcia | Voice for Health & Wellness

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jesse Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jesse, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
What’s life without risk? It’s what separates the ordinary from the extraordinary and the safe from the bold. As someone who grew up in the projects I have associated risk with life. The risk is an opportunity to make an impact in the world and elevate the people around me. Now don’t get me wrong, you have to be educated on the risks you take and make sure you know the ends and outs of them, I don’t encourage taking foolish ones. However, a chance to bet on yourself and put faith in the vision you have is something I think is worth it every time. Before I started my journey into entrepreneurship, I was a full-time student at the University of North Texas majoring in computer engineering with a minor in African-American Studies. I was working full-time jobs and living the typical student life that was sold to me in school. It was the safe thing to do; Go to school, get a job, work a job you’ll never feel will pay you your worth, pay back the debt accumulated in school, and save for retirement. That idea kept floating in my head and it was driving me into depression. So in 2018, I had an opportunity to take a risk, drop out of school, quit my job, and put my faith in myself. Five years later it has been the best risk I could’ve ever taken. With any risk I always suggest knowing your best and worst case scenario. For myself, the worst case would be that I would have to go back to school and get a job, best case I would be successful and would be able to put myself in a better situation to obtain my freedom. If you want something in life, take that chance and go get it. You have the opportunity to create the life you want, take that risk!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I create amazing, delicious art from raw materials using alchemy or in short, I make beautiful, sensational food. The thing I love the most about cooking is the changing of one thing into another and how that new thing brings people together. This is why I pour my heart and passion into what I do. To me, the food you create only tastes good when you care about what you do and how you serve it. Your emotions drip off into your meals and alter the taste because cooking is more than just the physical aspect of chopping, stirring, mixing etc. It’s combining the physical with your mental and emotional state to produce something divine and tranquil. Understanding that and respecting that is what sets me apart from others. That type of love and dedication led me to create the best vegan cheese sauce on the planet, called Truth Sauce. Of course, I wouldn’t have been able to make it to this point if I didn’t take risk and learn from my failures. Those failures can either make or break you a lot of times but if you look at it as a way of making you better and preparing you for what it is you’re asking for out of life than it makes it easier to keep on pushing. The biggest lesson that I learned through my trails and errors is adaptation and understanding. Things won’t always go as planned and sometimes you’ll need to pivot and make adjustments as they come, prime example of that is the pandemic. Some people couldn’t adjust to the times and it lead to things not working out for their business. Everything can’t be planned for so being able to adapt to change and understand that hard times are apart of the journey allows you to weather any storm. The biggest thing I want people to take from my story is that you have to give yourself grace and move at the pace that’s going to lead to sustained success. Everyone wants instant gratification and success but the quicker it comes the quicker it’ll disappear. Life is a marathon so find your pace and control your breathing. Everything happens in the time it needs to and not when you want it to. Trust the process and most of all trust yourself and the vision you have. Failures and obstacles help build you and shape you to be able to handle what is required at the next level.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We going to Bam’s Vegan! No questions about it! gotta take em to where the food is the best. Some of my favorite food spots in the city are Blue Sushi Sake Grill, Jinya, Village Burger in West Village, and Velvet Taco. Now if we hanging out and seeing stuff than we have to hit Cedar Ridge Preserve, White Rock Lake, and the Dallas Arboretum. I love being in nature so these are some of my favorite spots. I’m also a huge nerd so I love Information stuff such as the museum so the Perot Museum of Nature and Science and The Dallas Art Museum are always top picks. For fun, it’s hard to beat out places like Six Flags or The State Fair since that time of year is upon us. Can’t forget about Pan-African Connections! Always a dope spot to visit and support.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate this to my family, my friends, and my mentors that have provided me love and support through all the ups and downs of my journey. They the ones who showed me tough love and never just told me yes to everything. They kept me on my toes and help sharpen me very single day. I was on a path of self destruction before turning it around and for that I would like to dedicate my change to the book, “The Autobiography of Malcolm X” by Alex Haley. I relate to the duality of living the Detroit Red lifestyle and almost crashing out before seeing the bigger picture and making a lifestyle change. This book help shape the man I am today and continues to be the most impactful story in my life.
