We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeremy Spann and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jeremy, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
At 5pm on August 24, 2024 I will sail off into the sunset. I dropped out of high school at 17, had my parents sign for me, and entered the US Marines. I was not a bad kid, but had a high level of energy that needed to be directed. The Marines taught me how to be disciplined with my energy. After 6 years I went into law enforcement. The lack of sophistication with my own business acumen made me believe the only way to retirement was through a pension. In December of 2006 I was on my back patio with my uncle who had come to see me graduate from TCU with my undergrad asked me what my retirement plan was. I told him I had a pension at the end of my career where his response was “Let me get this straight, you are going to trust your financial future in the hands of the government?” This realization shook me to the core. A year later pension battles began all around the US. In 2014 I had just finished my MBA from TCU to set out into the free world to find my way to financial freedom without the dependence of the government. Two years later I lost it all, which was painful. I then made a plan in 2016 of what I wanted my retirement to look like and how I wanted to be in control of it. My wealth manager, Tim Hatcher, also a Marine told me to get an LLC so he could use it to invest in. I had already told him my exit date so I made it August 24th, 2024 LLC. I am happy to say I am on course to hit this date. In reality I could retire at the end of this year, but I want to stay on my current path.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
There is nothing easy about my life nor the routes I have chosen. I was never a safe play on the smooth road kind of person. I respect the law, obey the law, believe laws are important, but I want to break all the rules (that are not laws). I want to be different. I feel like pain is the most powerful professor in life. The more painful the lesson, the closer to the memory of that pain rests on my shoulders. Mistakes and failures teach us so much. This is why I have raised our daughter to believe that there is no such thing as a mistake, just a learning opportunity. Now, if you do not learn from that opportunity and repeat the behavior then that is a mistake where you should be held accountable. There have been good, bad, pleasurable and painful moments where all play a part of who I am and what I do. When asked if I would change anything I respond with “No, for two reasons. First, my life and experience has made me who I am. Second, I have been too busy my life moving forward to ever look backwards where if you do that is when you have accidents.” Nothing in my life is by accident, maybe not intentional, but not an accident. I live by two core values: First, us and the client/investor must have trust with each other. This is the value exchange. One sided is lop sided and someone is in the convincing business. I have neither the time or energy to be convinced nor conniving others. As long as we have that value exchange of trust then that unlocks the second core value called the value proposition in that your money will always be more important that our money. This philosophy has taken care of our clients and investors. When you make sure everyone else gets paid, your money naturally follows. Live by 3 rules: 1st your time is never free, don’t be in the convincing business and last stop caring what others think. Just hustle till those haters ask if you’re hiring.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is easy for me. Let’s jump on a plane and go somewhere they don’t speak English and do a culinary tour. I have visited more than 40 countries. The best food is always off the beaten path where there are no tourist. Food tells a story of that culture. To taste it and hear about it lets us open our eyes to other dimensions, cultures, people and personalities. This is how I connect with the world.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout goes to my wife, Laura, who took our vow of marriage to stick it out through thick and thin. I would have left me with the mistakes in financial decisions I have made for our family. Instead, she leaned in and said let’s be business partners. I lost my hearing in the Marines and wear hearing aids where my response was she needed to be wearing hearing aids since she was not listening to how bad of decisions I had made for our family. Her response was “you heart is always in the right place, you see the world like no one I have ever met, your drive for success is unreal, but your judgment sucks so Ill help you with that part and you lead us to retirement” 5 years later after loosing everything we now sit great financially while enjoying our other homes in the mountains and the beach. It is important to have someone who believes in you, has your back, willing to help, but also willing to tell you what time it is even when you don’t want to wear a watch.
