We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay Dee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jay, what do you attribute your success to?
In the early days of my entertainment career Dave Chappelle told me the key was persistence and in a way he was right. I believe you need a cocktail of persistence, authenticity, and drive to create your own path when it seems like there is no way forward.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I honestly don’t know one can answer some of these questions without coming across as self-indulgent so I’ll just go a little rogue as compared to how some contemporaries may answer. Movies, television shows, commercials, stand-up, and music are just small slice of what I put out there in the world and I don’t legitimately feel like it is my place to say what sets me apart from others. That is for the people to decide.

In a creative capacity, I am most proud of and excited about the fact that I have been able to help people forget about their stressful lives if even for a moment.

I’m in a business where you hear “no” a lot and have plenty of doors slammed in your face. That on the surface doesn’t seem easy but what is easy is the knowledge that there will be some “yeses” and what’s meant to be yours, will be. There will always be hurdles, whether it be in the entertainment business or in life, but successful people will always find ways to get over those hurdles instead of turning the other way like most do when it seems like the odds are stacked against you.

A lesson I learned along the way? Not giving a damn about what other people think. So many people never take the step to try, out of fear of failure or looking dumb(i’ve been there plenty). Once you get out of your own head and don’t take stock in what others think, you are truly free.

What do I want the world to know about me, my brand, or my story? I want them to know that if a scrub like me can do it then so can they. Find something you are passionate about and DO IT! I don’t care how big or small it seems. Don’t cave to society or your parent’s expectations. We only have so much time to live so lets make the most out of it and not have any regrets. You, yes you, person reading this article, you are awesome and you are unique so share that sh*t with the world. Who knows, you might just encourage others to do the same.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
DFW is a melting pot of diversity and I definitely dig that. It’s full of culture with endless possibilities. That being said, I will only mention my favorite attraction…the mambo taxi. Mi Cocina, can we get an endorsement deal or what?

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a shoutout to my kids. Both are way cooler than I’ll ever be and they taught me if at first you don’t succeed, it’s okay to cry for ice cream to make everything alright in the world. *aggressively eats 37th pint for the day while waiting for my agent to call*
