We had the good fortune of connecting with Javier Burkle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Javier, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
Shout-Out:
With Javier Burkle, owner + lead designer, Burkle Creative
Achieving both balance and beauty throughout bespoke designs, Burkle Creative’s first-class portfolio seamlessly integrates both old and new sensibilities in compositions that are simultaneously sophisticated and timeless, chic and warm. The firm is beloved for its high-low approach and irresistible spaces that feel traveled, collected, and above all, personal—thanks to the intuitive, intentional way they incorporate client collections and art within a space.
“I approach each project as a really unique story,” Javier Burkle, founder and owner, says, “and each room as an individual chapter. Burkle is well-known for his design talent, personal style, and creative vision. “By focusing on both function and beauty, our work is designed to stand the test of time. The result is a place they love to come home to that meets each one-of-a-kind lifestyle,” he says.
Q. Where are you from and how did your background and upbringing impact who you are today?
I’m originally from Mexico City, and my background influence my design style, tendencies, and inspiration. I’m inspired by balance and beauty, something I see throughout my heritage and surroundings growing up, and I love uniting the old with the new, so to speak, in my work. Mexico City is known for its colorfulness, its culture, and its authenticity—I’m proud to weave these things into my designs and my work!
Q. What’s the most important factor behind your success? And the success of your brand?
Old-fashioned hard work! Getting up every day and going to work with energy, a good attitude, and a passion for what I do makes all the difference. I love what I do—I think that even if design wasn’t my career, I’d still be involved with it in some sort of way.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We have a specific look to our work, but we take an artistic approach to our designs and projects, weaving personal collections, sentimental pieces, and items that lend a soulful feeling to a space. Projects by Burkle Creative are beloved for understated luxury, layered patterns, and showcased personal keepsakes that culminate in a curated, eclectic aesthetic. Essentially, we want to make a house a home, and create a place that uniquely reflects the journey and personality of each client.
I put my mind, heart, and soul into everything I do, and my team is incredibly gifted at translating a vision we all share. We work hard at everything we undertake, and we’re dedicated to being problem solvers to ensure our clients’ satisfaction.
I always tell my team (and myself!) that everything happens for a reason, and I really believe that—even when something feels like a setback, it’s all part of an ultimate plan that works out for the best, even with bumps along the way.
I’d love to tell the world that we want to create beautiful spaces that fulfill our clients’ lifestyles, and while our look is specific, we never shy away from interpreting our clients’ visions—it’s what gets our creative juices flowing!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Always start with a walk around Highland Park Village—I love the architecture, shopping, and atmosphere! Grab a morning juice at The Juice Bar and have lunch at Café Pacific (my favorite table is a cozy corner spot in the bar!). After making some great purchases, I’d grab a cocktail at Honor Bar and enjoy the patio.
Another one of my favorite days around town with a friend would be over at Knox Henderson, where I love to check out all of the new stores that have opened recently. Dinner at Mr. Charles is always a good idea, where I love to see my friend, Mr. Chaz, owner of Mr. Charles—I love to hear his take on local restaurant news and just catching up on life. I’d end the evening at The Mansion for a nightcap.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother and grandmother deserve a shout out in my life story. Their own creative backgrounds in design and art were an innate part of my childhood—I got the design bug from a young age!
I am also indebted to the Ralph Lauren brand, where I started my career and draw inspiration from today in just about everything I do. I’d also love to give a shout out to the charities in the design world who are dedicated to making a difference, including Kips Bay and Dwell with Dignity, who beautifully use design as a vehicle to give back.
