Meet Jasmine Suggs | Hair braider, Podcaster and Author

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmine Suggs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jasmine, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
When I first started my own business, I was available all day everyday. I didn’t have “hour of operation” because I was on a “go mode” mentality. Now that I have about 7 years in my business, I have set up boundaries. All money is not good money and precious moments with your family are priceless! I still don’t have it all the way together but making sure I stop way ahead of a “burn out” is really the change that I have done over time. I believe this regimen helps tremendously because now when I’m well rested, I’m more alert and have energy to get the style done better than if I was tired and in pain or didn’t have the energy to complete the style.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
So there are a few things that set me apart from others and that I’m most proud of. 1. My hair business strives to execute the style at a lower cost. I am always looking for ways to save money for others especially when it comes to accessories and not necessities. I love making people feel good about themselves at a lower cost. 2. Starting a podcast with my sister in love while we both were in different states and continuing to do that throughout the pandemic is another proud moment. We continue to stay as relevant with topics as we can. 3. I just released my 1st Devotional journal book. It’s not too long but it’s just the beginning of many. A lot of rejection came with each proud moment but pushing through was the main thing to do to reach my goals. Not being afraid to do something new is another way I overcame my challenges. It’s easy to give up and say “Well, I tried” but it’s even a bigger testimony to show people the struggle of what you tried, how you overcame the challenge and the lessons you’ve learned during the process. There are so many lessons that have been learned but the most common lesson that I’ve learned throughout being a hair braider, Podcaster and author is to pray about everything and see God in it all. Even if it doesn’t go the way that I want it to go, I have to be honest with myself and keep doing what God has called me to do on this journey called life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would spend most of our time eating. I love to eat and the first place we would go would be Legacy Hall. There are so many food options and if you want to shop, you can do that as well. We would visit the Klyde Warren park for food trucks. If it was a Sunday night, we would go to Neo Souls at Lava Cantina or find some soul food restaurants and karaoke bars to sing the night away.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I always like to give all the glory to God, my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for providing me with the variety of gifts to share with the world. My parents, my husband, my children, my family, my mentors and friends have been the most influential people in my life. I hate to start naming anyone specifically because I know I will forget someone’s name 🙃.
