We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmin Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jasmin, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
One of my favorite affirmations is, “You are exactly where you need to be.” There have been times in my life when I asked why is this happening to me. I even questioned good things coming my way. No matter what end of the spectrum I fell on, this affirmation helped me center myself. It is a reassurance of faith and the strength I have within
What should our readers know about your business?
Rootin’ for You is a Dallas based business whose main focus is to uplift expecting families. With our wellness and self care knowledge, we help you replenish naturally. Through our birth keeping services, we offer guidance and support throughout pregnancy, labor and postpartum. Rootin’ for You is different from other doula services because we also push the importance of holistic self care. Usually as parents, once your kids are taken care of everything else falls by the wayside. We all want to show up as our best selves, but you can’t pour from an empty cup. So whether, you’re coming to me for doula services, natural self-care products, or you’re looking for an intuitive message you can get all of that from one business.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I want to show someone around the city, we’ll definitely be heading to a few of my favorites places. I absolutely love the drinks at Ame located in Bishop arts. It’s obvious they’re not just throwing a few things together to make a quick buck. I’m also a big fan of the Indian-French concept. Gallo Nero in Greenville is definitely on the list. I’m a huge fan if Italian food. Mussels Mariana with a glass of red wine is the way to my heart. It never disappoints after a long week. I feel like it wouldn’t be right to pass up Kooly’s BBQ. They have the best loaded baked potatoes in the city. It’s a true hood classic. I grew up eating food like this so it will always make the list. The Free Man in Deep Ellum is the place to be for cajun food and live music; great service and great energy. If we’re just doing dessert, Emporium pies is a must. Order anything with a graham cracker crust. I’ll definitely be dragging my guests to Alkaline Hour. It’s a dope spot in Oak Cliff. I go there for sea moss, herbs, and fresh juices. I love breaking bread with people that have a similar vision for the community. It’s a win-win. While we’re in the area, we’ll definitely stop at the Pan-African store in the same parking lot as Alkaline Hour. They have tons of cool apparel, products, and books all centered around blackness. I can never walk out empty handed. Outside of shopping, the Pan-African store also hosts dance and yoga classes. They’re doing great things for the community. This is the area I grew up in, so I love to see it!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I invested in a mentor and I’ll always be grateful for her wise counsel. Her name is Chikara Rutledge. She’s a business owner, medium, and a root worker that created a virtual safe space for people to learn and grow with respect to black history. In order to have a solid foundation, you have to know where you come from. No matter the number of attempts, the history of black people is something that can not be skipped over or erased. She created a group tailored towards the African Traditional Religion, Hoodoo. This group opened me up to tons of knowledge. I’m thankful for her offering guidance and answering questions I have had over the years. She’s not physically based in Dallas but she is reachable thanks to technology.
