Meet Jarred Tobin | Doctor of Physical Therapy

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jarred Tobin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jarred, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My business was born from a place of need; both for myself and for the people of DFW. I went to physical therapy school with every intention of working for someone else and just collecting my checks to spend that hard earned cash with my wife making memories and traveling. Fast forward to graduation, obtaining the dream job and realizing it’s a scam. I quickly realized that the health insurance industry is letting us down and relying on them as a business is a huge liability. Couple this with a toxic work environment and gossiping staff, it was a no-brainer to not renew my contract and queue Movement Theory Physical Therapy and Wellness.
Movement Theory Physical Therapy and Wellness was born from the idea that our bodies need to move more and our healthcare system in general is failing us. Dr. Jarred Tobin PT, DPT formed Movement Theory in December of 2021 after a grueling couple of years working full-time with insurances. The re-emerging pattern, day in and day out, was that they simply didn’t care about the patients in front of me. They would deny coverage/authorization for patient’s for what seemed like zero reason, I can still think of a few that haunt me to this day; one case was a young man, about 21, who was paralyzed from the waist down from a gunshot wound. He wasn’t able to transfer to his bed, bathroom or anywhere except for his wheelchair and a blow-up mattress on the floor. This meant he wasn’t able to use the bathroom like a dignified human and was also forced to get “hosed down,” weather permit, outside because he couldn’t get into the bathroom. Insurance denied him saying it wasn’t medically necessary that he get services. Another lady was post-operative from a rather gruesome fracture of the forearm who after 2 months, was still unable to make a complete fist, again, insurance said, “close enough” and denied the rest of our visits leaving this woman either stuck without full function or having to pay the rest of her services out of pocket.
Queue Movement Theory, I was sick of being told what was supposed to be best for “my patients” by someone who has 1. never even met this person, and 2. has no clinical education in physical therapy. The other big issue I saw with accepting insurance was the unexpected costs that came to patients’ months after services have been rendered. This forced awkward conversations between provider and client, ultimately damaging the relationship or forcing the business to take a financial loss, which is not the best practice for longevity. With Movement Theory our prices are flat rate and if you have insurance, you can submit a receipt for reimbursement. Our primary customers are uninsured or those looking for a flex/HSA/shared services provider, with our relationship being non-existent with any insurance we can perform whatever services we deem medically necessary and ultimately give you the best care imaginable, we are also not forced to inflate costs to pay for support staff to help us juggle multiple patients at a time; we are purely 1:1 unless you specifically joined a group/couples class/session.
Movement Theory Physical Therapy and Wellness has been put on the trajectory of changing what quality physical therapy is in the DFW metroplex and is really about empowering our local community through movement and education to help get them back to what matters most to them. If you’re local to the area and are looking for a performance therapist who will listen to you, don’t hesitate to reach out, call/text or email.
What should our readers know about your business?
Movement Theory Physical Therapy and Wellness is a physical therapy clinic (subleasing inside of Panther City Strength currently) that has big dreams. Currently I am the only employee, Dr. Jarred Tobin PT, DPT, but have hopes in creating a network that is a haven to both clinicians and patients. By this I mean, well paid staff with a great work environment that isn’t predatory for profits and a space for patient’s to open up and be vulnerable so they can receive the highest quality of care.
I already feel like I’ve made bounds toward this goal, but the work is just getting started. I’ve been open for about 6 months now (10/10/2022), back in February I saw my first patient under the business and I’ve never thought of looking back. Being an out of network provider means that I can give the care my patient’s deserve and am not tied down by what insurance is going to pay for. Something that I hear time and time again from patient’s is that I listen when others haven’t. They’ve been telling the same story to other providers and feel consistently unheard, but not here. We address concerns, answer questions and provide a plethora of free resources to patients, all for the sake of helping them find their best life.
It’s not been easy to start and grow a business, especially one that’s inside of someone else’s business, has a mildly negative connotation to the general public and the environment is more “hardcore” in nature. However, I don’t think I would have started any other way if I was to have to go back and retry. I think the learning is in the struggle and since February we’ve done a lot of learning, but also a lot of helping and that’s what I want DFW to know; we’re here and we care. I’ve helped hundreds in Fort Worth and surrounding cities get out of pain and get back to the life they want and I want to help whoever is reading this too. Movement Theory Physical Therapy and Wellness is only the beginning and DFW will see plenty more “Movement Theory,” before we call it quits.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being from NRH we typically spend most of our time out here. When it comes to foods to try or places with great drinks we typically frequent Mi Pueblo off of Mid-Cities Blvd and the Japan House off of Grapevine Highway/Blvd 26. They have phenomenal food, great drinks and the pricing is spectacular. If we’re not at either of these places you may also find us having a slice of pizza at Bosses Pizza and watching some sports.
When it comes to walking around and seeing the sights you can never go wrong with the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, which Movement Theory Physical Therapy and Wellness is a proud sponsor of. You can check out the Trinity Trail for some exercise or even The Stockyards for all things Fort Worth.
Beyond this we typically stay at home and have people come play games or host trivia nights, or we go to them. Either way, out week/weekend would be filled with many laughs, food and drinks and good company of friends.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t even be close to the doctor, person, or man I am today without the unfaltering support of my beautiful wife, Brittney Tobin and my wonderful mother, Kathy Tobin. They’re the fuel to my spark and have been the catalysts to all of the successes I’ve achieved in my life. I want to thank my brother Zach for his constant support and helping me to see what it truly means to be selfless; I love you! My father, Shawn and his wife, Vickie, have been some of my biggest cheerleaders on my journey through adulthood and physical therapy school and I know I can always count of them to boost me up. I also want to shoutout the great group of physical therapists that I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and becoming best friends with out here in Fort Worth. Lastly, I want to thank all of the patients and clients who have trusted me with their health and lives; you’ve helped mold and shape me into the compassionate listener that I truly want to be known as.
