We had the good fortune of connecting with Janeé Hill and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janeé, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
Seemingly successful on the outside but broken on the inside. That was me years ago.
I was at the height of my career, had all of the “things,” yet felt empty.
I realized something needed to change, but what and how?
For me, when chose to give my life to Christ and turn from the things that were tripping me up, true success began to happen.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Imagine a world where media was used for positive purposes and women worked together to make the world a better place. I am turning this dream into a reality through UNbroken, a brave movement of women who are taking action and creating change.
UNbroken exists to arm, avail, and activate women to be the change they want to see in the world. UNbroken’s brand components are supportive community groups aka squads, mentor-led learning experiences, and meaningful media.
UNbroken believes we ALL have opportunities to learn and grow and do life better. At our core is a model that allows us to GIVE and GET strength, resources, and connections from one another.
The journey to here was not easy. It was full of a lot of miss-steps, let-downs, and pivots. Through it all, I have learned so many valuable life lessons.
1. Surround yourself with great people, who you trust, and help them shine.
2. Look for ways to add value and help others first. Yes, this is counter-culture:)
3. Approach everything with curiosity. Ask lots of questions versus giving all of the answers.
4. When doors close, evaluate before you choose to bust them open.
5. Vulnerability and authenticity is hard. Do it anyway. The mask of perfection is exhausting and robs us of opportunities to be celebrated as our true selves.
Outside of UNbroken, I LOVE helping businesses (large and small) tell their stories. Whether it’s through events, video production, keynote presentations, or conversations, we ALL have a story. Let me help you tell yours.
Finally, I have a knack for putting all of the pieces together. If you are like me, you have LOTS of interests and abilities, the opportunity is how to put the puzzle pieces together. I’d love to help.
Most importantly, it’s NEVER too late to be the person you were destined to be. Your past does not define you; it can refine you. My life is an example of how your mess can be turned into a masterpiece and message.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Dallas Fort Worth area has SOOO many interesting things to check out. I’d love to share a few not so known experiences.
1. Grand Prairie – YES! Grand Prairie truly is GRAND. It has a 172-acre adventure area known as Epic Central. Watch the water/ light show while nibbling on delicious bites. Climb the next peak at The Bolder. Experience the most EPIC workout ever at The Epic Rec Center (which is NOT your mom’s fitness facility:) Seriously, Grand Prairie is my new fav.
2. The Stockyards in Fort Worth – Where else can you see a herd of cattle walking the streets?
3. Take in a show at The Echo Lounge in Dallas. This new venue is so unique!
4. For some fun fashion, check out Favor the Kind. Not only will you experience fab finds, this unique boutique prides itself on making the world a better place.
5. The State Fair of Texas – YES, the State Fair of Texas is FANTASTIC. AND, equally as important, the funds raised at the Fair go to support nearby communities.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
“Behind every successful woman is a tribe of other successful women who have her back.” Unknown
Truly, I would not be where I am today without the MANY women who gave me a hand up along the way, believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself, and championed for me behind closed doors. It is the example of these women that inspired me to create UNbroken.
Below are a FEW of the MANY who forever shaped me into the person I am today.
Kelly Bennett – My first boss who took the time to get to know me as a human. She exuded kindness and encouragement as a leader, showing me that leaders are people too.
Elizabeth Bryant – Elizabeth saw me through a very difficult time in my life. She advocated for me to get the help I desperately needed.
Donna Conover – The epitome of strength, smarts, and goodness. This lady helped me make a tough decision that forever changed the course of my career.
Debbie Rasa – My go-to mentor, friend, colleague and advocate…and did I mention my co-heart (pun intended) in helping women?
Ed and Valerie Riefenstahl – Two of the kindest, most accepting humans I have ever met.
Pastors Cyd and Ricky Texada – Pastors who truly love like Christ
Brandy Rebol – Believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself.
Brian Hocker – Former GM at NBC5 who always took my calls:), gave me great counsel re: the television industry, and encouraged me to keep on.
Galen Brueggan – Many people SAY they support; Galen SHOWS it daily, reminding me to look up always.
This question is a tough one as SOOO many people helped shape me into the person I am today. MANY thanks to each of them.
If I didn’t list you, that doesn’t mean you aren’t a significant part of my story. Simply, this is a short piece, and I could write a book with all of the people who deserve credit.
