We had the good fortune of connecting with James Henningson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi James, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
People greatly underestimate the time that maker spaces spend on hr and volunteer management. It’s important to have a corporate culture that encourages membership over being a customer. When people see themselves as part of the bigger initiative it makes management of a maker space much easier.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I came to the makerspace 7 years ago to do some electronics work. Instead I found a passion for glass, jewelry and lapidary work. I’ve even won awards for my glass and jewelry work.
It wasn’t what I set out to do, but the culture at the makerspace encourages creative exploration and growth.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Eat: babe’s in downtown Carrollton and the H-mart plaza in Carrollton See: the crow collection, klyde warren Park and the Perot museum
Hang out: a Stars game and deep ellum
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The officers and committee chairs that help run the Dallas Makerspace every day. Without them none of this would be possible.
