We had the good fortune of connecting with Jahnya Barnett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jahnya, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to help people learn how to take care of their hair, especially those who were just starting their transition from chemically treated hair. I knew I could use my journey to assist others. I was encouraged by many to start a hair care line and I figured well, why not give it a try.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart is my ability to create uniquely while appealing to varying tastes. Be it hair care or my music, I can appeal and adapt. I do what feels good to me first and foremost.
I definitely reached where I am by a series of events. Just trying things, networking, and faith.
I’m not sure if I’m most proud of anything in particular except the fact that I’ve done most of what I ever wanted to do and more in my life. From modeling to music, I’ve accomplished a lot. It has never been easy. I went through phases I’d never imagine going through. For most of my life I’ve known myself to be confident and in control. Even if I had to do something scared I did it. There came a period of my life when so much was going on at once, I completely lost sense of who I was and what I was capable of doing. I eventually overcame because my body told me I had no choice to. My mind and heart was tugging at me. I started to get back to the basics and do things that would help me return to myself.
Through it all I’ve learned to never doubt my own voice, and it’s totally okay to be myself.
I’d like for the world to know that I have a lot of love inside me and I share it through what I create. My hair care and my music.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I LOVE to eat, so I’d take them to grab food from my favorite spots. Kashi for sushi, Press 195 for burgers and fries, Empanada Mama for empanadas and amazing guacamole. I can go on and on lol. We’d definitely hit the beach and workout.
I’d say the boardwalk and beach is one of the most fun things. The nightlife in Manhattan and Brooklyn is dope as well.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost; God. My parents and family. My childhood friends who’ve been with me on my journey. Beres Hammond, who’s been a mentor and father to me in music and life.
