We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacob Woo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jacob, how do you think about risk?
I think there is risk in every decision you make big or small. Related to business I think risk needs to be calculated. When you have done your research, have gotten organized, and came up with your 5-10 year business plan then I believe the risk you have taken is calculated and you accept the results of your hard work.
Risk has been a big part of my life/career. I dropped out of college with one more year left before I graduated to take a job as a warehouse worker in hopes of making my way up the chain and learning the business side of the flooring world. I have always been part of the flooring world on the labor/installation side, but never on the business side. I worked hard and learned everything I could and when the time came I took the risk to start JW Flooring.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Here at JW Flooring we are here for all of your flooring needs. From wood, carpet, tile, vinyl, laminate and more. What sets us apart from our competition is that we hide nothing. We have videos and pictures of our work to view right on our website, so that new customers can see our quality of work. The thing I am most proud of is the craftsmanship of my installers and the joy/support I receive from our customers. To see the happy reaction from someone who spent thousands of dollars with your company to remodel their floors is a whole other level of appreciation. I am most excited about growing this business, and getting the attention and respect from our community.
I got to where I am today business wise by working to learn instead of working for a paycheck. I also never took any customer for granted learning from the successes and failures. Starting a business is never easy and how I overcame challenges is by dedicating my time to my business, and working off of very low margins to earn new customers and showing what we can do. The lessons I’ve learned on this journey is that starting a business is a roller coaster of emotions and you have to believe in yourself 100% and put the work in. I want our community to know that as we continue to grow our intention is customer satisfaction over profit. The more satisfied customers we have the more we grow.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would have to take them for some Texas BBQ. One of my favorite places is rick’s smokehouse Barbecue. Another small business with great food! We would have to visit our famous Reunion tower. Go watch America’s team at the AT&T stadium. And catch a Maverick’s game as well. There are places all over the DFW for all types of people and life styles. This place is beautiful.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout out 3 women in my life. I want to shout out my Mom for helping me see the bigger picture and supporting my decision to take the warehouse job. My mother in-law for giving me the support in quitting my job to pursue my own business. And last but not least my wife for paying all of our bills while I worked my butt off to get JW Flooring off the ground.
