We had the good fortune of connecting with Jack Kristian and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jack, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Being a husband, a father to 18 month old twins and a self employed business owner… you can understand that a work life balance absolutely comes with its challenges, but it’s ever so important. I feel like my balance is constantly changing on a day by day basis. There are days that I need to lock myself in a room and answer emails, build playlists, write up contracts for 10 hours… and then there’s days that I hardly open up my computer and solely focus on spending time with my family. One of the big struggles of being a self employed (single operation) business owner is if you don’t work, you don’t get paid… and obviously there’s a level of pressure that comes with that, especially when trying to support a family. Sometimes I have to remind myself to take a break and refocus on why I’m working so much to begin with. The plus side to working for yourself is being able to manage your own schedule, which in my life means that I can be there to get my daughters up in the morning, and work while they’re at day care, I can be there to pick them up, eat dinner with them, do bath times etc and then open my computer back up once we’ve put our daughters down to sleep. Another obstacle with working in the wedding industry is that I work almost every weekend. My wife works a Monday – Friday job so I try to make sure that we all have at least 1 day a week all together where we can do something as a family. This tends to be either on a Friday night or Sunday depending on the week. It’s really important to us that no matter how busy we get, we still commit to quality family time.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a full time professional DJ. Since coming Stateside from England in 2015 and starting my business in 2017 I have been able to build a business with a great reputation that I’m very proud of. My latest achievements have been to create a few viral videos on TikTok which has set fire to my brand not only in my area, but all over the United States. Joining TikTok was something that I avoided for years with the fear of lack of views, being attacked by keyboard warriors or just the risk of being rejected but putting my work out there as far as posting videos of me mixing, talking on the microphone etc has truly been one of the best decisions that I have made in my career. It has opened doors, introduced me to new people and given me opportunities to be a part of some amazing events all over the country that I may not of been able to before. For that, I’m very proud but also very thankful!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being from England originally, I turn into a tour guide whenever family come to visit! Some of our favorite tourist spots in the area range from overlooking the city at Reunion Tower, to visiting the JFK Memorial, watching an FC Dallas soccer match or one of my personal favorites, visiting The Stockyards… which to us Brits, is very cool!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my success and growth of my business to my wife, Ashlee. Ashlee has always supported me in my dream to be a professional DJ. Through the risks, countless hours, non stop music in the house and working late nights she’s always believed that I should be doing exactly what I’m doing. Thank you!
