We had the good fortune of connecting with Jace Hudson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jace, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
As a custom painter by trade, a very niche line of work. There aren’t many paths other than running your own business. The decision wasn’t ever really thought out; it came more out of necessity. In 2015, after going back and forth from being self-employed to working for one of my mentors, dating back to 2004, I decided to start what I have today, The Fast Life Garage. What was different about this go-at-it was social media. Instagram allowed me to showcase my work outside of my local market and curate a better clientele for my style of work. By 2018, nearly all the work I produced was for out-of-state customers.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I create a few different forms of art.

In custom paint on motorcycles, I describe my work as a blend of traditional lowrider style and modern race graphics, giving the modern designs a bit more soul. Custom paint, airbrush, and pinstriping tend to fall in the lowbrow or kustom kulture art category, which I’m cool with. Creating my style is a mixture of influence and time. Over my twenty-year span, building my technical skills and allowing the influence to flow through me is where I have carved out my look.

In Photography, I have been on a similar path of not rushing the process and ultimately trusting the process. I work on my technical skills, allow inspiration to push me in different directions, and then let time do its thing.

Every artistic and creative path shares some similar challenges. Some are with the changing and evolving times, and some are within ourselves as we change and evolve. Each offers you a chance to grow, reinvent, or course correct.

My brand is a channel for me to create paint work, custom motorcycles, and capture moments in time. It is also a place for sharing stories and ideas, and hopefully motivating those seeking it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My family has deep ties and history within the Bishop Arts District. I personally find the pace and vibe of that area, blending in with the Kessler area, to be my go-to.

A solid day on motorcycles through Dallas would be in the morning, kicking off with some Norma’s cafe, followed by maybe a cruise across the bridges and through the design district, stopping in to do some vintage browsing at Lula B’s. Then, we caught some mid-day beers and food at the truck yard in Lower Greenville, followed by a night cap at our Local Bike Night (T-Bar Tuesday) at Cold Beer Company.

I feel that Dallas has amazing food, patios, and nightlife, some decent shopping, and zero nature.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Over the past twenty years, I have had countless inspirations and mentors. Some that deserve the most attention are from my younger days. My grandfather, Ronnie Jackson, was probably the most impactful on my work ethic and my figure-it-out mentality. He gave me the best foundation to build from, which led me to my first job in the custom motorcycle and paint space. Gary Queen of Other Side Customs gave me the opportunity to hone my skills and explore my creativity while working at his shop. Instagram once again opened my eyes to the larger world of opportunity and lifestyles. I met my wife, Britta, back in 2013, and since then, she has been my motivator to pursue many other areas of creativity, from Photography to starting The Fast Life Podcast back in 2018. I am always looking for the muse in my life to create.
