We had the good fortune of connecting with J Terrell Jeter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi J Terrell, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
It’s definitely improving. I wear so many hats. I’m a teacher. I model. I’m a photographer and videographer. I have a few more ventures that haven’t been announced yet, but i definitely decided this year I was going to start making more time for what I personally want to do and luckily, I have a great team and support system behind me that’s always pushing me!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Modeling for me is something that comes natural. I love coming up with new concepts and new ideas for shoots. My team is absolutely amazing. I just started working with a new photographer Alex Martin (@iamalexjmartin) and he 100% down for the ride even with the crazy concepts I may have. But even as a model, I try not to box myself in that’s not only what I want to be known for. My goal is to build a brand overall. You may see me on a couple of apps very soon hosting a couple of shows or even at an event coaching athletes. I love to stay versatile. Explore different options and opportunities and see where the next one may lead.
I think my most exciting and accomplished venture so far was walking in Los Angeles Fashion Week last October. It was a crazy experience and not to be returning in March for Los Angeles Fashion Festival is even something that still gives me chills.
Honestly, there were a lot of self doubt. There’s definitely a point where you may feel like well what if I do this and no one responds to it or it’s not received in a positive light. When building a brand or any business, I believe that is the key thing that stops people. Being a teacher, this is what I actually teach and I tell my students this as well. You can’t let those fears and voices and opinions stop you from what you want to do.
I would say I want the world to know. I’m here. I’m resilient, and I’m going to win! Whether it be on a runway, I’m front of a camera, behind a camera, on a show or podcast! I’ve sat back long enough…let’s get it!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am actually still exploring. I am from Louisiana! So I’m constantly looking for new places. I’m sure I’m the same as everyone else (we all have that list of places saved that we have seen on Tik Tok) I love the vibes and a good time. Something not to busy and low-key. My first spot and they way to my heart is food. I have been obsessed with Korean Barbecue since moving out here! So Fusion Kitchen in Plano, TX! I eat there AT LEAST once a month. I literally all you can eat buffet style Korean style meats and vegetables. It’s A1!
As far as a vibes spot, food and drink and good time with friends. Daiquiri Cafe in Firewheel Town Center. They have Karaoke, wings, and the daiquiri are great!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to say to everyone, no matter what age nor occupation or location…Just keep pushing and make time for YOU.
Everyone get’s so caught up in working a regular 9-5. They do not make time for what they personally want to do or the adventures they personally want to have. We have been taught that we live to work and that sucks!
Get up and start project around house you’ve been wanting to do or that start that health change that you have been wanting to make…make time for it and do it for you! Baby steps first! I promise you will feel so accomplished!
