We had the good fortune of connecting with J-Stuy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi J-Stuy, how do you define success?
I define success by if a person set a goal or goals and never gives up trying to achieve them that is success.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As an artist I consider myself to be a story teller. Which is funny because I use to write stories as a kid about random stuff. I think what sets me apart from todays climate in music is just lyrical ability, sure I’m good at story telling, I’m even okay at making catchy songs, but when it’s all said and done i really have what hiphop would call bars. I take pride in the fact I’m a skilled lyricist , I don’t think too many artist today care if they’re skilled only care their music is good.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We can definitely do a happy hour in the city. We can get drinks and dinner at gyu kaku which is a Korean bbq place. We can also go to this place in the city called summit one. Bowling at frames in the city for breakfast we can hit juniors in downtown Brooklyn a lot of people go there for the cheese cake but their French toast to me should be just as popular and maybe we can go to a museum.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife and my daughter in October of 2020 during the peak of Covid my wife got pregnant. I wasn’t thrilled about it because I always said I didn’t want kids until I do this music thing. My wife wanted to keep the baby which started me on a path of resentment towards her. Although I wasn’t happy about the decision I was at every appointment I even sold my sneaker collection so I can afford a car so I can pick my wife up from work everyday and also so we don’t have to be on the trains and busses with our baby . About 4 months into the pregnancy I’m still harboring resentment I finally ask myself why are you so upset it’s not like you don’t want a family but music music music music so then I asked myself if music is the issue you’re 27 years old at the time why haven’t you made it and I started thinking about my journey and what I haven’t been doing. I came to a realization that day it’s not the baby it’s me and I will work even harder now that I do have this baby because I want to show her dreams do come true.
