We had the good fortune of connecting with IVANEVID and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi IVANEVID, what inspires you?
I find my greatest inspiration in landscapes and, the feeling caused by light variations also, the shape of the clouds and how the shadows of the trees are projected on the floor or other surfaces creating abstract shapes and movements very similar to those of water, vapor, smoke or even fire. Because of that I discovered that energy actually works in very similar ways but on different scales. The dance of lights and shadows teaches me a lot about how energy works and, motivates me to represent it in my work and all I do as an artist.

With all this source of inspiration I found something else, the way all affect us as humans and communities. I’m very focused on transmitting that abstract sensation of community in my work and how lines and shapes that seem spontaneous but the reality is that I create them with a specific intention, to communicate something, or to touch us in a unique way to make us feel something special

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have drawn most of my life, since I was a little kid, probably before I could speak I started to draw. I’ve been exposed to art since an early age, visiting museums and concert halls has been present in my routine since I was a kid. The first art class I had in my life I was around 4-5 years old with piano lessons and I even drew in my music notebooks… about 4 years later I discovered the saxophone and I really liked it, my parents gave me an Alto Sax and then I started taking Sax lessons in Mexico City. I played with some Latin, jazz, rock and ska bands but my interest in graphic art continued to grow and mural art really caught my attention when I started to learn more about the great masters of the Mexican Mural Movement such as Rivera, Siqueiros, Orozco and other masters such as Raphael and Michelangelo, so in early days at high school I discovered graffiti and found it as a good way to start painting in large format, that is when I started looking for my own graphic style.

A few years later I studied at the Mexican Faculty of Architecture, Design and Communication focused on Graphic Design. There I learned a lot about how to communicate ideas graphically, transmit sensations thanks to the theory and psychology of color and many other visual techniques that helped me a lot. Something that I loved about the time I studied at college was that the analogue era was about to end and the digital era was beginning very strongly, so my study program included the best of both eras, so I took advantage of that knowledge.

Most of the time I worked on my own so I had the opportunity to create clothing brands, direct graphic campaigns, develop brands, etc. Between all that I painted occasionally, more as a hobby and from time to time I had clients interested in murals so I offered to paint them. I even did two multidisciplinary art events, handling the art direction in both events, one in 2013 and another in 2017, where I brought together visual artists, musicians, filmmakers, sculptors, photographers and many others to make up the events. It wasn’t until 2021 that my wife and I get an invitation to move to North Texas, we accepted and together we decided that in this new place it was time to try to make the art my full-time job, it was now or never, so once we were in our new home we looked for places to open my studio and we found it at the beginning of 2022.

Fortunately things have been going well, since we were only about two months away from opening my studio at LAST ART GALLERY in Downtown McKinney, TX, I’ve been invited to participate in a mural festival open call and I did not hesitate to apply. Happily they picked me as the main muralist and my design would be the icon of the festival, a 45×45 ft mural in a historic place, The Cotton Mill, which has opened many doors for me, because with it I have demonstrated some of my capabilities as an artist and muralist and although it has not been totally simple, but my art, my name and the graphic quality in my work have been gaining recognition in the North Texas area little by little and also in other parts of the United States, Mexico and also some cities in Europe thanks to the street art I do. Last month I received the great news that several of my works had been selected to be featured in a couple of simultaneous exhibitions, one for an exhibition called “Hecho en Dallas” at the Latino Cultural Center and another at Plush Gallery located at Dallas Design District. I was also invited to paint a couple of murals in Mexico City at the beginning of September which demonstrates the acceptance of my work and that little by little it is gaining recognition in various places. Now I am preparing for my next Solo Show that will take place on December 15th and 16th at The Cove, a gallery located in Historic Downtown McKinney, TX, all with new pieces prepared especially for the exhibition

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A place that I really like in Dallas is the Arboretum, I really enjoy it because the gardens are very beautiful and very well maintained, and of course seeing all the variety of flowers they have.

Dallas also has very good museums, such as the Dallas Museum of Art, the Meadows Museum, the Perot Museum, even the Latin Cultural Center since its architectural design is by a great Mexican architect that I greatly admire.

Also at McKinney Historic Downtown, it is a very beautiful and well-kept place that even makes you feel like you are in an old movie. My studio is located right there within LAST ART GALLERY, open to the public every day of the week. Also the Cotton Mill is a historic place where there are many art and design studios and also two of my murals and other fellow artists.

Bishop Art District, Dallas Design District and in general Downtown Dallas are definitely great places to visit.

Also to some of my favorite restaurants and places, here they are:

Dallas:
Tacos La Ventana, they are delicious!
Eataly, especially Terra, the one upstairs.
Cafe San Martin
House Of Blues
South Side Ballroom and The Kessler for the best concerts in town

McKinney Downtown:
Layered for breakfast
Harvest for dinner
The Garage and Spoons for any time

Plano:
Salsa Verde Taqueria, other good tacos
Lockhart Smoke House
Urban Crust

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I believe in the power of teamwork, that no one can really do anything alone, and one of my greatest inspirations and support is my wife, she really believes in me and encourages me in many ways and also, sometimes, turns my ideas into something stronger. To all the love, support and guidance of my parents and siblings that is something irreplaceable, the cheer of my relatives and friends, new and old friends, and all the people that felt connected at some point with my art, specially kids that there’s something they see on my work that make them feel comfortable and happy, and of course to our creator for gave us the power of imagination and the capability to express ourselves in many different ways.
