We had the good fortune of connecting with Isabel Solis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Isabel, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born and raised in Germany but with Hungarian parents who escaped the communism with nothing to their name. Growing up with my parents as role models who showed me that anything is possible, no matter where you come from or how hard your circumstances are. I learned early on that with a strong mindset, dedication and the simple trust in yourself and the higher power you can achieve what you really want in life. I moved to San Diego 2 weeks before my 22nd birthday. Experiencing a different culture than my own really opened my eyes to respecting and accepting everyone. Being on my own in my twenties made me truly grow up and find out who I am and what I can be capable off without anyone’s support or help.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a graphic designer and I started working for a product design company years ago. I learned a lot on how to work with clients, what kind of questions to ask to understand what they are looking for and also to be flexible and transformable in your creative process.
Once I gained confidence in my art I decided to work as a freelance graphic designer, make my own schedule and grow my clientele. I grew most of my clients that I work with through referrals. I love to be creative and to see my creations come to life, to help my clients grow their brand and be part of the process.
Graphic design is only one side of my professional career. I am also a fine artist. I need the balance between hands on creative work and digital designing. I use wood, acrylic and resin as my main materials. I am beyond excited and proud to see my artwork in someone’s home, to give a customer joy through my creations.
One thing I still need to invest more time and effort in is promoting my work enough on social media or other online platforms. It doesn’t come naturally to me and I’d rather spend the time creating and working on projects.
Time management is such an important aspect in establishing a professional career and keeping a healthy work and life balance.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
San Diego has so many amazing spots but I think I would take them first to the tide pools along sunset cliffs. Have a picnic at Kate Sessions Park that overlooks the entire city and have dinner in Little Italy at Queenstown or Nolita Hall.
I would go on a road trip along the coast on the 101 and stop at all the cute beach cities along the way. Destination would be Napa Valley for a fun wine tasting experience.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First of as previously mentioned the biggest shoutout goes to my mom. I lost my mom when I was just about to have my second daughter. My mom taught me what selfless love really means, to believe in myself and she also taught me about the power of thoughts & words which I use every day in words of affirmation. She was my biggest believer and both my parents supported my move to California right away.
I found lots of wonderful friendships since I moved to San Diego. All of my close friends always encourage me to keep going even if it seems sometimes impossible to manage raising two kids on my own and to work as an entrepreneur.
Last of Wayne Dyer is one of my biggest mentors (even if he has no idea haha). His way of teaching to let go of any resentment, to learn self love and to love and accept everyone in your life really made a big impact on me.
