We had the good fortune of connecting with Isabel Burton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Isabel, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It was a dream of mine to bake for people and make them happy through my baked goods. I love creating new products and having others enjoy how they taste and look. How they are displayed on the table and the creativity of themes used to show them off.
I had many friends and family that really enjoyed my products and through word of mouth my customers started growing to the point I started selling my products at farmer’s markets and local events.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I learned to bake from scratch at Luby’s Cafeteria and discovered I had a real talent for it. I have been baking now for 30 years. I developed my talent at many different jobs, at corporate cafeterias for the most part. Making everything from cookies, pies, cakes, pizza dough, breads and more healthy options like fit bars that are low calorie.
Now I am a manager of a high school cafeteria serving around 500 meals a day as my full time job.
I started The Cake of My Dreams as a hobby at first only selling to people I knew and it has slowly grown from there. I hope to one day retire from my current job and go full time in my own business.
Baking for others makes me happy and I enjoy peoples faces when I have made something for them that they maybe couldn’t make for themselves but had a vision of what they wanted and I surpassed their expectations.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The time of year would be key as the summers here are too hot. I would plan the week around going to a Texas Rangers baseball game and enjoy all the different foods and snacks they have in the ballpark.
A trip to Six Flags over Texas is a must!
Take them to Mansfield Farm & Cottage Market to support local vendors and so she can see my booth where I sell my baked goods.
I take her to my favorite TexMex restaurant Abuelo’s and have chile rellenos and frozen margaritas.
I would also take her shopping at the Parks Mall and maybe Ross Dress for Less for some bargains.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Debra Laird at brushlessartdesigns@gmail.com is who keeps me going on the long market days when they are slow and keeps me motivated. She has been my friend for several years and we support each other every weekend we are at the markets.
