We had the good fortune of connecting with Hope Helms and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hope, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
1. Always be learning and cultivate a curious mind. Keep a growth mindset.
2. Show up and do the work. By that I mean, don’t just spend time learning about or dreaming of outcomes. Tie action to your learning. Actually show up and put in the hours–consistently. In showing up for your work for the sake of the process, you’ll silence the voices that tell you exactly how something must be done–honing your skill and creating a path forward.
3. Iterate. Every so often stop and ask yourself what’s working and what’s not. Then, apply what you learn and iterate on those ideas.
4. When you fail, dust yourself off, see point 3 and try again.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My current work focuses on impressionistic Texas landscapes and florals.
Chasing beauty through art has given me a deeply spiritual path forward beyond my personal limitations and circumstances. The act of making something beautiful is continually becoming a source of solace in my life that I’m compelled to share with others. What began as a creative experiment – teaching myself to paint – has turned into a life-changing experience and growing business. For me, painting is an act of hope and flourishing, bringing the light of the New into the here and now.
My work exists to bring these moments of light and beauty to the world – to create beauty that lifts us up and nourishes our heart and home – so that the ties that bind us to the good, true, and beautiful can flourish. This is my passion, and I am committed to the process, however messy or ugly it may at times seem.
It has been anything but easy getting to this point in my work, but the support of my family has encouraged me to press on to where I am today. I’m grateful for them!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would probably take them several local coffee shops, find good tacos (there are so many places!), and show them the art museums and city gardens!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Many thanks to my family for their endless support and excitement about my work.
