We had the good fortune of connecting with Heart of the City and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heart of the City, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
We play music that brings a message of hope. The songs bring awareness to the struggles that many have with depression and anxiety while also speaking to the beauty that life has to offer.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We are a band that is signed to Hand Drawn Records. So far, we’ve released one self titled album on the label. We are where we are due to the drive that we have to keep going. This music thing is in our bones, so we are all aware that we’ll never shake it. This is the thing that we can offer the world, so we are pushing to create the best thing that we can. It’s certainly not been easy. That is never more evident than when you are playing to only the other bands on the bill at midnight in Chicago, but you push through. Music makes us happy, and the hope is that that happiness spills over to the listener. We can all use a little more joy in our lives.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’d start with Will Call in Deep Ellum. The place is owned by our buddy J. R. Munoz. They have the best cauliflower and fries on the planet, plus the vibe is great. Three Links would be part of the night as well. You can rest assured that you’re going to catch a great show there any night. Shooting over to Sundown at Granada for a show and margarita is never a bad idea either.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d say the Deep Ellum music scene in general. We’ve all been playing in bands throughout the years, and Deep Ellum has cultivated quite the pool of really great artists. We are on bills with rock, americana, and soul groups, and it all works really well together. Everybody supports each other which is such a magical thing. We also work a lot with the Cure for Paranoia team. Those guys are the best!
