We had the good fortune of connecting with Guillermo Chavez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Guillermo, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Originally, I had worked for a collection agency collecting healthcare accounts from insurers for area hospitals. There was only one lawyer that was available that collected from health insurers through litigation. I knew that if i finished my law degree and passed the bar, I knew my niche would be in this area law. Now, we are collection law firm that does general practice work as well. With insurance collections as our foundation, we have expanded to other areas of practice, such as family, criminal, wills and estates. and probate, and other civil law matters.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Our firm is collection law firm that does general practice work. Our mission is to devote ourselves in providing legal solutions tailored to the individual in an open, creative environment. We want to help all people that walk through our office. We follow the Golden Rule as means to show compassion, empathy, and love for our fellow man. Our core niche is hospital collections from insurers. Hospitals hire us to collect their account receivables from insurance companies that do not pay those claims. This is a behind the scene benefit that patients receive from our client hospitals. At times, it feels like we are like robin hood; collecting from the insurers (the rich) to pay the patient’s account or debt (the poor). We have since grown to other areas of law that can help people in our community. We do family law, wills and estates, probate law, criminal, and other civil litigation or mediation, and can do it all in Spanish that can help the Spanish speaking population in DFW
My accounting degree in addition my law degree made it possible to have business acumen. I am not saying it was easy, but it made understandable. The challenge was human behavior on conducting business or retaining existing business. I call it the likability factor. You are only as good as your last win or the perception thereof.
As time progressed, we created a foundation that helps charities in the local area. This is what we want to be known for. GJC Cares Fund is a means to give back to the community. The employees of the firm nominate local charities and then vote for the best charity to donate from the foundation. We try to do these donations on a quarterly basis.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The older I get the need for relaxation is more desired than for example, dancing at a major Dallas club. I would most likely take them on a casual boat ride in lake Texoma while visiting certain marina eateries and restaurants or just hanging in one of those island beaches at the lake. We can also wake up early or go night fishing for those big stripper fish. OR go to the Choctaw casino since its relatively close to the lake as well. Plenty of things to do at the lake that is relaxing and not chaotic.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Only a few people are ones that supported me through this process. My mother (Leticia Chavez Martinez) was the only one who believed that I could become anything I wanted to be. She engrained that idea into my head through out her life and mine. My ex-wife (Terri Williams) was also integral in supporting me through the process. She raised our three kids while I went to school. We sacrificed a lot to achieve this ultimate goal. And lastly, my business mentor, (Jerry O’Connor) that invested in me in hanging my shingle until I was able to to do it on my own, He introduced me to the collection business, all the while, teaching me how to be successful in that business. And for Buddy Holt, a pastor, a friend, and a brother in life, he continues to encourage me through the love of God and scripture, and through his business acumen. Without these people, I would not be successful in this endeavor. I thankful and grateful they were part of my life at the moment I needed them to be.
