We had the good fortune of connecting with Grant Zubritsky and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Grant, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Work/life balance is on my mind even more now that it ever was before Covid. Starting out as a musician in Brooklyn in the late 00’s, I didn’t have much of a balance, and I think that was because I had a lot of big goals I wanted to accomplish. I haven’t necessarily accomplished all of those goals, but I think I’ve recognized that I need my career to be sustainable. Some of those goals have shifted, and others have gone away entirely because I’m more interested now in being a musician for my entire life rather than burning out after 5, 10, or 15 years. I still think I work hard at my career, but am just more mentally comfortable with the down time and personal time.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a musician. Within music, there are so many amazing facets, and I try to be involved in lots of different parts of music. I work a lot as a Music Director, which is basically the band leader or producer for the live show. Putting together great performances is a difficult task, and beyond the music, it takes lots of communication with everyone involved. Something that I learned along the way is that every gig you take is part of your career, no matter how big or small. Even if you don’t like the work, there is always other reasons to give your 100% best. You don’t know when someone else involved in the project may call on you for another gig or project and being nice and professional goes a long way. Something I’m really excited about is my upcoming EP called ‘Chooser.’ It will be out under my moniker, GZGZ, summer 2022.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
After pursing music in New York for about 5 years or so, I was feeling like maybe it wasn’t going to work for me. Things hadn’t really clicked in a substantial way. When I met drummer/composer Robby Sinclair, things changed for me in my career, and not necessarily just because of connections or opportunities. Robby Sinclair is now based in Paris, France and he is an encouraging, thoughtful, and generous musician who’s ethos and approach to music felt very akin to my own. We often worked together as a rhythm section around NYC and on numerous tours, and his dedication to music is contagious. He taught me so much about lifting yourself up through music and how to be proud of your own work. He continues to work in Paris and throughout Europe as a composer and drummer.
