We had the good fortune of connecting with Grady Spencer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Grady, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
At the time that I decided that I would try to go all-in with the music side of my life, I was burning the candle on both ends as far as my full-time construction job and also a full-time touring schedule. My wife and I kind of put our heads together and decided that for both our sanities, I wouldn’t be able to juggle both jobs forever. So we did some pretty serious budget planning, took a deep breath, and in March 2020, I quit my job and started music as my only job. It was definitely daunting and scary, but also super exciting and open.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what sets my music and songs and brand apart from others is just the general positivity that I try to communicate and express to the world. I would prefer to sing uplifting, happy songs about love and joy 9 times out of 10. As far as how I got to this point, I basically just started playing 3 hour cover gigs at bars and restaurants in Lubbock, Texas 12 years ago. Over time, I would eventually start to write and record my own songs and have been lucky enough to find band members that have complimented and helped my music grow and spread. It definitely hasn’t ever been easy, the countless hours driving out on the road away from our friends and family is always the toughest part. But the rewards of seeing and hearing people connect with and sing your music back at you thousands of miles from home is always super helpful to the drive. I think the biggest lesson I’ve learned in a world of social media and phones, it’s super important to stay focused on your goals and what aspects of your career you have direct control over. It’s so easy to look at someone else’s career or business and compare to how you feel like you’re doing. Many times, it’s an unrealistic and extremely damaging flow of thought and is never helpful or encouraging at all to compare yourself to someone else’s career.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely tap into all the new growth of the area while also hitting all of the legendary spots around Fort Worth. There would absolutely be a meal at Tokyo Cafe, Heim BBQ and Fred’s Burgers. A drink or a couple at the Usual or Nickel City. Catch an intimate show at Magnolia Motor Lounge or a bigger one at Tannahill’s Tavern or Billy Bob’s. Then would also take them to my favorite spot in downtown, the Water Gardens.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Most definitely my wife, Kaci. She’s the one that I always say is doing all of the hard work. She not only supports and encourages my dream job, but she stays home and keeps the train on the tracks as far as caring for our children and our home. She’s most definitely the most valuable player in this equation.
