We had the good fortune of connecting with Francis (Ssu-ing) Wu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Francis (Ssu-ing), what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was trained as an architect, I went to architecture school in Taiwan and graduate school in Michigan. Observation of the existing environment has always been a big topic in architectural design, and I found my interest in photography echoes that idea. The more I use cameras to capture human interaction with a space, the more I’m bonded to this format of art, and eventually decided to start a business as a side gig.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I wouldn’t call my business a success yet, I’m still learning and there’s a long way to go. I never took any classes in photography and learned everything by myself. I employed the training I received in architecture school in photography and thus decided to focus on architecture photography. I am particularly interested in the relationships among architecture, the environment, and human behaviors. The three characters are interlocking with each other and it’s impossible to separate them apart. Under this condition, how they peacefully interact with each other with harmony becomes extremely critical. and I’m interested in capturing these interactions.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In New York City – there’s never a moment of boredom. Asides from the popular tourist attraction, plenty of jewelry were easily found in every neighborhood. My favorite spot is the Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island. It’s not difficult to get there but you can find a place so tranquil and peaceful, making it a great but rare escape right in the city.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Everyone who appreciated my work and gave me opportunities/guidance to become who I am today.
