We had the good fortune of connecting with Faryn Schwartz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Faryn, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Honestly, when I entered the fitness industry I was 16 years old. I started out by working at the front desk and cleaning machines at the gym I was working out at. I had been active most of my life (a very short 16 years) I grew up dancing and having a deep and natural passionate connection and relationship with movement as well as martial arts, running, lifting weights, gymnastics. Dance was my first love. By the time I was 18 years old I knew I wanted to be a Personal Trainer. I left home at 16 so it was survival mode and it took me some time to actually make this happen. Finally at 19 years old I had been able to get a few certifications and began working In-Home with clients. At that time it wasn’t thought of as having your own business. It was just that you were a Personal Trainer. As time went on I grew and it has grown exponentially into so much more than I could have ever envisioned. For me this has become more about overall wellness and that this is my career not a job that I am extremely passionate about I and that understand the body differently. I think about the person as a whole. How are you feeling, eating, sleeping, thinking, how has trauma affected you and how does it show up in your body, do you have injuries, health conditions, what is your mental health like, how does your body move and function. I am very detailed and take a preventative and proactive approach. When I think back had I been able to do that at the young age I when I began I would say what I say now. All I want to do is to help people feel and move better. Mentally, emotionally and physically. The connection between the mind and body is so deeply connected and I just want to help others unravel and heal not just for now but for their long term wellness.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart is that I am not a competitive person. I know I am not going to be a good fit for everyone and that’s okay because I want people to find the best fit for them and their needs! I know there is always something new I can learn and I love that! I am not the coach that is about bringing on the pain to gain or the go hard go home mentality that the fitness industry thrives on. I am the complete opposite of that, this is where I feel like I align more with the Wellness community more than the Fitness community. My approach isn’t about fast results it’s about long term health and feeling good without pain or discomfort along the way. It has become normalized that fitness should equal pain and suffering to achieve results and I don’t agree with this.

Having your own business or being an entrepreneur is absolutely not easy. But I do think there’s a lot of freedom that can come with it. You definitely have to have the spirit for it. There’s ups and downs but hey that’s life right. Finding a way to pivot or get creative is the key and sometimes that’s when it can be the hardest. When you’re going through the down times it can feel hard to be creative and not be critical on yourself. What’s helped me has been going back to my mental health and getting realigned or checking in, I learned that I can’t neglect my mental health and that if I am not healthy in this way that my career doesn’t work. It’s all tied together. I love what I do and I do it with so much passion!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love Oak Lawn, you could hit up Sues or a drag show at S4 or Hamburger Mary’s. For the best sushi I’d go to Uchi but for great sushi HH and much more reasonably priced go to Blue Sushi Uptown. Klyde Warren Park is fun and Bishop Arts has this great place called Wild Detectives that’s a book store/poetry slam/story telling with drinks and coffee and light bites!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My dad was a help and encouraged me in the beginning of my career journey and I appreciate him for that! Also my dance teacher Carolann Valentino, still to this day who says I should be dancing.
