We had the good fortune of connecting with Faith Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Faith, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
Deciding not to listen to the voices of others. If you feel something is right for you, all you can do is try. I’d rather live my life trying and failing than looking back with regret because I didn’t give it my all. You’ll often find in the creative industry that people will say “Get a real job” or “Maybe this isn’t the right field for you” and that’s when you power down and work even harder to reach your goals. Silence the voices of others and put one foot in front of the other.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started my creative journey as an electronic artist. My dad and I were in a touring band called “Neon and Red” from there, my desire to be enriched in the music industry developed and I took a liking to photography. I’m most fascinated by capturing creatives, artists, and musicians behind a lens and have enjoyed getting the freedom to create the scene and layout of the photoshoots. When I was an artist I always found it difficult to find a photographer that knew how to pose me in the right way, so I find it very helpful that I’m not only a photographer but I also pose and shape the body in a way that is very appealing. Everyone wants to look their best behind a lens and that’s where I come in. As a creative, I believe I am constantly facing challenges. We often find it difficult to fit in and it almost feels as though we are constantly transitioning. As for me, I recently left my 9 to 5 to continue the pursuit of my passion. Although I’m not where I need to be and I don’t know what the next step will be, I know I’m on the right path. I’d rather chase my dream and live a life of fulfillment than be drained by the constructs of society and it’s unrealistic expectations.
I use my deep pain to create images that reflect softness and beauty. I believe that each individual has their own characteristics that make them beautiful but a lot of the beauty and inspiration comes from growing pains. Although life is sometimes difficult, we must make something from it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a major coffee advocate. I spent years as a barista so in some ways I tend to be a little bit of a coffee snob. I’d take them to West Magnolia Ave. in Fort Worth for a cup of coffee and then head on down to Doc’s Records and Vintage. After we pick out a few vintage fits we’d head on down to trinity park for a stroll next to the river. After we’ve walked for awhile and are getting hungry we’d head over to Velvet Taco. After velvet taco, we’d head over to a Sofar Sounds show where we can enjoy the intimacy of music and mystery.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My middle school drama and choir teacher Petra Lyon is my greatest inspiration. As a young child, I had no idea the impact she would later have on my life. She was the first person to take us to New York to sing at Carnegie hall and the reason I continue to fight for my creative freedom. My dream is to one day open a music venue / creative space and involve her name in the project.
