We had the good fortune of connecting with Estella Sanyu Ntavyo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Estella Sanyu, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Why I chose to pursue an artistic/creative career is because I believe it’s a form of therapy that helps me express myself! When Im feeling emotional but don’t know what to do with myself, I’ll crawl into a hole and let my soul do the writing. The next day Ill look back on my lyrics and get a MAJOR understanding of who I am at that moment and what it was that was putting me in that state of mind. I think being an artist is just so magical for the fact that we humans get to be the creator of a whole vibe! Knowing that I can make someone feel what they didn’t know they felt is what keeps me buying more pens!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Well, It all started with my sister Kaze wanting me to harmonize with her while she was using the bathroom! I really wasn’t with it but she always asked so nicely hahaha! Im the youngest so I used to watch my sisters singing in the church choir and I could instantly hear their hearts calling rather than there voices! All that emotion and love… I rarely had a dry face during praise and worship! I wanted that feeling so badly too, so when I finally was old enough to hold a decent enough note, I was hooked! At that time Sera my oldest sister had already been recording her own music so with that started my backup singing career! We’d perform at open mics, heritage festivals, churches, independence days, and anything else we could find until we decided to host our own concert. That’s when I knew this is the life I want and that’s period! None of its been easy to accomplish but it sure is an easy yes when asked if this is what I want to do with the rest of my life! Talking helps overcome many of my challenges because i get great advice from my loved ones. But, On days when it’s hard for me to open up, nature and breathing exercises get me there always! I’ve learned that just going far what you want will ALWAYS get you places!
I want the world to know that my name Sanyu means happiness and even tho I’m not always the brightest star, I do want to help you find your way through your feelings no matter the topic!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Okay so some places My homies and I think are poppin for nightlife are 7th street in downtown Fort Worth & Deep Ellis in Dallas. They both have a plethora of bars and clubs you can hop from. For some morning vibes I’d hit up the water gardens in Fort Worth or botanical gardens which is huge and great for not only cute nature dates but also some marvelous photo shoots! Now for food, DEFINITELY have to go to Sweet Georgia Browns I’m Dallas!!! Omg the BEST soul food in the country I promise 😩 I might just have to get some today man!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Omg! I need to give a Shoutout to my family, friends, & God! Let me tell you, my family is straight up addicted to music! We have songs blasting from different rooms of the house it’s that crucial! I have 2 older sisters, Kaze & Sera Lubowa that are also singer/songwriters, who pushed me to this dream! We have our own girl group that we started over a decade ago performing Sera Lubowa originals. If not for them I really don’t think I would’ve come this far! Thank you to my home girl Raven for always starting a conversation with “ okay but have you heard of Sanyu?”
& of course, Thank you God for my life!
