We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric Kasmire and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eric, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
After abruptly departing the Oil & Gas industry in the spring of 2020, I tried to find a position that was as fulfilling and well-paying but those management positions were nonexistent. I started a sole proprietorship LLC where I learned a few lessons in running a business but it did not quite deliver as I had hoped. I knew I wanted to own and run a small business but I did not know what shape it would take. When a buddy approached me with an opportunity start a business in the DFW Real Estate/ Investment Property space I pounced on the opportunity. I did not plan on starting a maintenance company but since I was prepared for anything, I honed my handyman skills and went to work.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I spent twenty years in the US Marines. I did not enlist with a twenty year plan; every four years I was having a great time so I just kept signing up to keep deploying. It was an honor to fight along side the greatest warriors our nation has ever produced. After several combat deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, I realized that this period of my life would not (could not) last forever. As the twilight of my career winded down, I decided to learn about business and jump into the Baylor MBA program at the Hankamer School of Business. At the time I was still stationed in Camp Pendleton, California with no idea I would migrate to Texas (not far from the Baylor campus in Waco, Texas).

It was difficult adjusting to the world outside of the military while earning a graduate degree. I jumped on the first opportunity I could to move my family to Texas. This period of our lives was wild and unpredictable but I praise God we live in DFW. It is without a doubt the greatest place to live… period. As one might imagine, I surround myself with veterans as often as possible. The opportunity to dive into a business with my wife, working closely with some Marine buddies is better than I ever could have imagined while I was hanging up my uniform. We are tenacious problem solvers who attack problems with the same aggression we invested while on active duty.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Defender Outdoors has some great ranges in the area to enjoy if all you have is a few hours to spend. If you have an entire weekend? What is that like? If I had a whole weekend to spend for fun I would get out of the city, hunt whatever critter is in season, set up a camp site and enjoy a slower speed for as long as I could.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife, Jessica is the only reason this adventure became a reality. Her natural ability to make things beautiful and her relentless energy make this company special. The Obstacle is the Way is a great book to read after choking down a devastating blow to your career (thanks Spann).
