We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Winnenberg and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
When I started Superbloom Design Co. I had very specific goals in mind for the future. Namely, I wanted to achieve a level of success within my business to be able to donate murals and floral arrangements to charities and organizations I was called to uplift. Last year, I had the amazing opportunity to donate floral arrangements to a Refugee Services of Texas benefit event in honor of Ukrainian and Afghani families. This year, I had the honor of donating my painting skills to DIFFA, Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS, for their benefit gala. I hope to continue to be able to contribute to events like these in the future and consider it an immense privilege to be able to do so.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Looking at my art career up until this point, I’d say I’m most proud of the work I’ve done for Savory Catering. They have been my most loyal and consistent clients, and I’ve loved working with them to achieve their goals. I’ve helped redesign and install all new menus at 4 of their corporate cafes and 4 of their restaurants: Nodding Donkey, State & Allen, Social Pie, and Maple Landing. I’m sincerely looking forward to painting their logo on the side of their offices later this month, a huge project that is fulfilling a career-long dream of mine.

As for the challenges I’ve faced, I’d say I’ve been pretty lucky! There are, of course, many growing pains that come with starting a small business, but they’ve been few and far between. Perhaps my greatest challenge has been learning to charge people adequately, and stand behind my worth and pricing. That’s never come naturally to me, but I’m learning just how important that is when maintaining a business. Plus, charging what I’m worth now allows me to meet my goal of donating my time and services later on down the road.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d treat them to a weekend full of art and food! Big fan of a quick breakfast, so I’d take them to Shug’s for bagels and coffee. I have a sweet spot for the Nasher Sculpture Center, because in the summer of 2016, I was a media relations intern, there. I’d insist on also visiting the DMA next door, because there’s always something dynamic and exciting going on there. For lunch, I’d show off one of my favorite lunch spots, José, on the west side of University Park. They serve contemporary Mexican cuisine, and my favorite menu item is their Coconut Ceviche. For the afternoon, I’d recommend Bishop Arts and Reveler’s Hall for live jazz, my favorite. Then for dinner, I’d take them to Alice, for Asian/Spanish fusion tapas.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to specifically thank Gigi Coker for her incredible mentorship during the preparation and execution of the live painting performances at DIFFA, this spring. She is an invaluable resource of information, and is leaving a beautiful legacy of artistry and education.
