We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Pittman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
When I first started my business, there was so much going on and I honestly didn’t prioritize my time well. I was trying to shoot, edit, get my client management systems going, trying to make connections and relationships, and I quickly realized that if I kept going at this pace, I would burn out. Over time, I have set some healthy boundaries for myself because I am a wife and a mom to a small toddler! I love my business, but I also love my family and I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t putting everything into my work and then very little to my family. Setting office hours, setting quiet times on my phone, and choosing my “shoot” days throughout the week helped a lot at first. I made small changes and then made bigger ones as we went along. I hired my assistant, Tori Worsham, and she has taken so much off my plate and has added so much value to Emily Liz Photography.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well, I am sure we have all noticed that there are A LOT of creatives out there. There are just so many incredible artists that are trying to break the molds of wedding photography and I love it! One thing that I hold dear to my heart and I think others notice about me is my ability to make anyone feel comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera. When people feel like they can be themselves, they create the ability to make some pretty incredible art.
A lot of people have asked me how I got to where I am today. It’s patience, time, and allowing yourself to mess up and try again. There is not overnight solution to getting better. It takes picking up the camera and shooting! How will you get better if you don’t practice? Is it easy? No. But if it were easy, it wouldn’t be as fun. The failures, the set backs, the trying again and again, makes you better.
I’ve learned that I have what it takes to be great, but I also need people alongside me to help me get there. I have enjoyed learning from others and allowing others to challenge me and help me break those walls down!
Emily Liz Photography is about telling stories. When you’re 80, I want you to hold on to those photos and be able to relive every minute of your day and let the memories flow!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Wow! There are SO many fun places in Dallas to hang out, eat, drink, and have fun! One of my favorite areas in Dallas is The Bishop Arts District. I love walking around down there and shooting film, shopping in the cute shops, eating at Emporium Pies, visiting a vintage clothing store, and then grabbing some Eno’s Pizza!
Another great spot in Dallas is LoRo off of Haskell Ave, an asian fusion restaurant that has incredible food and cocktails. A few other restaurants that I love so much in Dallas are Yutaka, Times Ten Cellars, Ole’s Tex-Mex in Coppell, and Chuy’s!!
Other spots that we would visit are the Kennedy Room, The Dallas Arboretum, George’s Coffee Shop, and The Southlake Square.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people that have helped me get to where I am! It’s so hard to pick just one. My parents, my assistant Tori, my friends, my photography community, and my husband and son. I want to specifically shout out my husband, Zack. When I first approached him with my crazy idea of being a photographer and I didn’t even own a camera, he said, “ok, let’s do this!!”. He has always encouraged me and supported me throughout this journey. He asks me the hard questions and challenges me to keep going and stretch my creativity.
