We had the good fortune of connecting with Emilie Gosselin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emilie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I never thought I would be able to make a living from my art; it all started by chance with sharing my work on social networks. I received many positive comments as well as personalized orders from my network. Little by little (it all started in 2021), I created a website, started a professional Instagram account, and posted content. And the magic began
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I often get this question from other artists who are struggling and want to break into this field. My art is beautiful, yes, and so is others’. It is unique to me and represents me a lot. I have often reflected on that, how to find our style. But it’s the style that finds us, you just have to let go. It’s not easy because in my opinion, an artistic process takes years, even a whole lifetime. We artists are most of the time perpetually dissatisfied, we are almost all hypersensitive, but it’s also what makes us evolve and what makes our art so beautiful. To come back to the main question, in my opinion, people buy art first for the artist behind it and not just the work itself. I believe I have been able to connect and make myself loved by my audience by sharing 100% of my daily life, and by staying authentic.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It’s a difficult question because Québec is full of good restaurants and culture. First of all, I definitely recommend visiting Old Québec, Petit-Champlain, the Plains of Abraham, Grande-Allée, Rue Saint-Joseph, and Rue Saint-Jean. There are plenty of art galleries and restaurants. I recommend Bello and Portofino. If you want to stay at a hotel and get away from the city a bit, I recommend Hôtel le Bonne Entente for its many amenities, including a 4-diamond restaurant, a spa, and a pool. You’ll feel like you’re on a trip to the south. For shopping, Galeries de la Capitale is a must-see.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I owe my success to my loved ones who have greatly encouraged me, because at the beginning I believed in it more or less. I really realized this gift I was capable of through my successes, I had the flame that I believe comes to us without us seeing it coming. I owe my success also to hard work, but especially thanks to passion.
