We had the good fortune of connecting with Ellen Ky and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ellen, what do you attribute your success to?
My brand has grown because I’ve stayed authentic to who I am—especially on social media, where it’s so easy to curate a version of yourself that isn’t real. Instead of trying to appeal to everyone, I focused on showing up honestly, sharing my values, and creating content that reflects what I truly care about. That shift didn’t just bring me more clients—it brought me the right clients. The ones who align with my energy, trust my work, and make what I do feel meaningful and joyful every single day.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art lives in the details—shaping hair in a way that works with its natural texture instead of against it. I specialize in cutting and styling thick, coarse, and curly hair, and what sets my work apart is the intention behind every decision. I’m not just giving people a haircut—I’m helping them feel at ease in their own hair, sometimes for the first time. That moment of relief and recognition when someone sees themselves in the mirror and thinks, “Finally, this feels like me”—that’s what I’m most proud of.

Getting to this point wasn’t easy. Early in my career, I constantly questioned myself, especially in an industry that can feel image-focused and competitive. But I realized my strength was in showing up as myself—no performance, no perfect persona. I learned to stop trying to be everything to everyone and instead focused on showing up for the people who truly needed what I had to offer.

If there’s one thing I want the world to know about my brand, it’s that it’s built on trust, empathy, and education. I meet my clients where they are and help them create a routine that fits their real life. My work is about freedom, not perfection—and I think that’s what makes it powerful.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend visited Dallas for a week, I’d start with brunch at José for upscale Mexican, then explore the Arts District and visit the Perot Museum. We’d spend a day outdoors at White Rock Lake and the Dallas Arboretum, followed by dinner at Pecan Lodge for classic Texas BBQ. Another day, we’d check out Deep Ellum for murals and live music, and finish the week relaxing with a spa day and shopping at NorthPark. To wrap up, a slow Sunday at Klyde Warren Park and brunch at Rise would be the perfect send-off.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My boss, Blake Brister, has been incredibly supportive in helping me grow both my business and my brand. From hands-on marketing support to mindset coaching, he’s gone above and beyond what most would expect from a leader. Blake helped me see that my own mindset was the biggest barrier to success—and once I recognized that, everything started to shift. His guidance challenged me to think bigger, get out of my own way, and truly believe in the vision I have for myself.
