We had the good fortune of connecting with Elizabeth Bernal and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Elizabeth, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I’m not one to normally take risks. I would never want to do something that would have a negative impact on myself or my family. That being said, when it came to starting my own business and other endeavors, I felt like jumping right in was the way to go. I had been thinking about starting a business for quite a while but I ended up starting out without having a solid plan. While this is not something I would advise everyone do, the fact that my business is craft based made that approach easier for me. I already had a lot of supplies to start out with that were from crafting on a hobby level and my family contributed items as well. Sometimes taking a leap of faith in terms of business, even when it might be risky could be what needs to happen to get the ball rolling. While there are stresses that come with it and trying to work things out financially, I do not regret my leap. Now physical risk taking, like jumping out of a plane, definitely not for me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I put a lot of myself into my art. When the tag says stitched with love, it’s the absolute truth. A little idea I had while cooking one day of a tiny wool cat stuffed with a spell pouch has turned into a whole business. I am very proud of those little cats. Each one is hand cut from wool that has been taken from thrift store clothing and then stitched and stuffed by hand. They are all unique and I love when a customer comes back to see me and pulls their little cat from their pocket or bag and tells me they love it so much and carry it everyday. Seeing that makes all the challenges of the time it takes for me to make those little cats worth it. I am still learning how to balance making and the rest of my responsibilities, but I think that is a struggle I share with many other makers and vendors and we support each other however we can.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a friend visiting Denton for a week and had to choose some must do things, they would definitely be centered around food. I would take them to Komodo Loco, Andaman, Pickled Carrot, and Milpa for sure. Drinks at JKs Lounge where my friend Cassie would make some of her amazing signature cocktails and then sitting outside at East Side. A visit to True Leaf Studio, Denton Community Market, Sleeping Lizzards, and Bewitched Denton would also be a must for us. I know there are things I am missing. There are so many great local spots here that are so wonderful.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Professionally I have to give a shout out to Diane Pereira from Fort Witch and Jessika Davila of Stones & Bones. Without having seen what Di has done for the community in Fort Worth and the encouragement that Jessika gives me on a daily basis, I don’t think Woolen Witch Crafts or Every Witch Way Denton would exist. And of course my husband, Jesse, deserves a huge shout out for having my back through all of it. There are so many others that have provided encouragement along the way, such as my sponsorship from Bewitched Denton and all of the vendors who come out to participate in EWW markets. It takes all of these people to create success.
