We had the good fortune of connecting with Elijah Muhammad and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Elijah, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
The most conventional piece of advice that I disagree with is when people say, “it’s time to grow up” or “get your head out of the clouds”. I think these ideals often don’t leave room for people to dream or fully be their imaginative and creative selves. I think it is unfortunate that children are encouraged to “dream big” and use their imaginations, but suddenly when we become adults those things are no longer valued. There are so many people that have pushed their dreams and ideas to the side to focus on what we have been told is most important in adulthood – practicality and productivity. We have created a system that has pitted practicality against dreaming. However, I believe it should be a marriage of the two; in essence we should be encouraging people to be practical dreamers. Meaning, dreaming should precede practicality. More specifically, we should educate people to dream first, big as they can, then discover how to practically make that dream a reality. I think our world could be a better place if more adults were channeling their inner child and dreaming big.

What should our readers know about your business?
As young entrepreneurs, my wife and I constantly strive to be and do better. In our attempt to navigate all aspects of life, we found that immersing ourselves in a balanced atmosphere is vital to becoming our best selves. What we feel, hear, touch, and especially smell, are all components in creating that atmosphere we desire. As candle lovers, we felt a natural progression to craft candles that could generate that same harmonious atmosphere for others. Our company motto is: Better Candle – Better Atmosphere – Better You. We decided to make a better candle in order to enhance people’s atmosphere, and in doing so, hopefully inspire people to be better in the process.

What being a better candle means… We ensure our ingredients are natural and clean, while still maintaining bold and appealing fragrances. Selecting clean and premium products results in a luxury candle that purifies the air while filling it with amazing aromas. Also, all our fragrances are free of phthalates, carcinogens, reproductive toxins, and other common hazardous chemicals that are in so many other candle products. We also have created our own custom blend of coconut, soy, and bees wax. The coconut and soy waxes enable a softer wax, which allows for a better cold and hot throw. Meaning, our amazing scents permeate the atmosphere while the candle is actively burning or simply on display. Beeswax is incorporated solely for our customers’ benefit. When burned, beeswax cleans the air acting as a natural air purifier — all to make our customers’ atmosphere better.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For any nature lover I would recommend checking out some of the beautiful scenery that Dallas has to offer by taking a hike. My favorite spots are White Rock Lake and Cedar Ridge Preserve. For anyone who wasn’t interested in hiking but likes to chill in the outdoors, I would recommend visiting Klyde Warren Park and ArtPark Trinity Groves. There are so many restaurants to enjoy in Dallas, it is hard to narrow it down. But for breakfast I would recommend Ellen’s Southern Kitchen. For lunch I recommend getting your fill of the best soul food around at Sweet Georgia Brown. For dinner I would recommend me and my wife’s favorite spot Al Biernat’s steakhouse. And finally, for a fun night out I would recommend going down to Deep Ellum where you can hop between more amazing food spots and lots of fun bars.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shout out to my late father who was my teacher, my friend, and my hero. He taught me to be a person of principal and continue to strive to be the good in the world. Also, to my wife who is my partner in all aspects of life and my best friend. I wouldn’t be able to bring my dreams and ideas to fruition without her. I’ve also found inspiration from so many great books and authors. If I was to suggest one author, it would Simon Sinek.
