We had the good fortune of connecting with Eli Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi ELI, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
I do know for certain, right about the time I think I might throw in the towel the business picks up and shows me we are not over yet. Someone told me a long time ago that you cannot fail until you quit, so I must decide every day that I am not ready to fail yet, and the next day I open the doors again.

However, I do think if a business is failing by bleeding your personal accounts dry or getting in the way of your relationship with your family it might be a great time to re-evaluate. But, if it’s just a matter of low self esteem, lack of determination, or fortitude… keep going, Never Give Up The Ship!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
AXE + ARROW TCO. was created as a men’s outdoor clothing brand and has turned into an outdoor inspired men’s store. The shop carries outdoor apparel and accessories as well as grooming, camping, BBQ, barware, and we recently added cigars, pipe tobacco, and accessories. It has been a long journey since 2017 to now, somedays are hard but somedays are awesome! I have learned a lot about clothing design, curating products, and premium tobacco, and all the learning curves have been worth it! The best advice I can give anyone is to be ready not to make a dime for several years. Unless you just happen to be lucky the road to turn a small business into a large business takes a lot of time, effort, and money. It can be done, but very few make it work, because it is a lot of hard work, but it can be done.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The other shops here in Canton are awesome. My favorite is the local bookstore A Wicked Read, The Pony Expresso Coffee Shop and the best bar and food in the county is Native Son!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
All the great outdoorsmen, explorers, and writers of this country that have come before me. Theodore Roosevelt, John Muir, Mark Twain, lewis and Clark, Jack London, Hemingway and many more are the hero’s among men. The great creation of our National Parks, Trails, CCC and Smokey the Bear have all been a huge inspiration towards my journey. My nostalgia for the old Field & Stream days, to the here and now of great Outdoorsman/Writer Steven Rinella, it all somehow is a part of my creativity when it comes to curating and the design of products or ideas for our shop.

However, all the things I do would never happen without the support of my wife and kids. It would all be for not without them.
