We had the good fortune of connecting with Dustin Dixon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dustin, what do you attribute your success to?
-Answer every inquiry, be it email or dm’s, that you possibly can. People connect to a brand better when they get a response. I know this will be more difficult as growth happens, but I think it is a very important step towards growing a brand. -Keep the content out there in front of folks.
-Set up the shot. Always look for creative ways to take your photos for your social posts.
-Continue the grind even when you don’t want to.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Mule Skinner Smoke Rigs is a custom offset smoker fabrication shop located in Bristol, TX. We strive to put out creative & quality products in the market. We are fairly new to the BBQ world, but I have been welding for 24 years. I’ve always had a creative side to me and metal has always been my medium. I love to take raw materials and create something from nothing.
Nothing comes easy, we all face challenges and deadlines on the daily. To overcome, you have to continue that grind, continue to push. Get out in front of folks, help another BBQ crew out at a festival, don’t be scared to help even if you don’t know what they are doing exactly. Don’t be afraid to work! Meet people, talk to people, get to know the community that you are a part of.
I want the world to know when they contact Mule Skinner Smoke Rigs for a build they are connecting with quality and will receive the customer service they expect. Everything we do is based on the approach, that we won’t send it out if we wouldn’t use it for ourselves.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We like to eat so…Terry Blacks BBQ in Deep Ellum, Mi Cocina, S&D Oysters. These are my family’s favorites.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would have to say my Dad. He is the reason behind the name “Mule Skinner”. He was a truck driver for 30+ years and that was his CB handle. We started building these “pack rigs” trailers to haul luggage and a Mule packs gear, so the name was fitting. Once we started in with the smokers the name carried through and it’s unique. Dad had prostate cancer in 2015 and beat it and then in December of 2021 found out that it had metastasized onto his spine. They removed everything and he went through treatments. He is doing well and gets to go with me to BBQ events all over the state. He enjoys coming up to the shop and watching the process and I’m glad BBQ has brought us closer together. Now the name means even more and I want his name “Mule Skinner” on items all over the world!
