We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Michael Razz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Michael, how do you define success?
Success is such a funny word. What I’ve found over the course of my life is that you think you’re going to be happy or fulfilled when you get to the “success” of a certain goal. But then what happens is that the goalpost moves! Our constant striving for that feeling of arriving at success can weigh heavily on our souls if we let it. After all, comparison is the thief of joy.

I’ve learned to define success differently. Success is not a specific goal, but a constantly shifting state of living a life in line with your purpose. I believe strongly that God plants a seed in our hearts regarding how we are supposed to use our gifts to fulfill a mission for our life. That’s why a day can feel so good when you are living in accordance with your gifts and aptitudes, and why the same work or same day can really weigh on someone else. I believe that God has a purpose for our lives- chiefly to honor Him through the work of our lives and to have relationship with Him- and that we ultimately are successful when we are able to get in line with that purpose.

To sum it up, success is about fulfilling your purpose on this earth. And, it is such an amazing feeling when you find it!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve bee so blessed in my career. When I first got out of residency, I worked for one of the best doctor’s that I’ve met. His name is Clark Colville, and he was a pioneer in Invisalign treatment. He taught professionally for Invisalign all over the country, received multiple awards for his lectures, and even taught at my old dental school, The University of Texas School of Dentistry in Houston, TX.

Going to work for him was like a second residency, and really pushed me to grow in my skills as a clinician. He taught me not only how to achieve incredible outcomes for our patients, but also how to deliver that care in a way that helped my patients and my team feel loved and appreciated. I’m so proud to be able to call him a friend and mentor.

I’ve also been blessed to learn from incredible doctors like Drs. Frost and Nichols who have pushed the frontiers of truly exceptional smiles by incorporating laser gum recontouring and cleaning up the chipped edges of teeth into their orthodontic practices. I also got to attend multiple amazing continuing education events about airway analysis and development in young children- one of them at the Stanford School of Medicine. Razz Orthodontics stands out as a practice that values exceptional results and the hearts of our patients because of this, and that’s something I am really proud of.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love our little corner of DFW. Flower Mound is such a wonderful city. It’s got all the perks of the city with the small town vibe of the suburbs.

Our favorite restaurant is Bistecca. It’s an Italian steakhouse, and the chef is incredible. He’s won numerous awards all over the world in cooking competitions, and his son is taking over the restaurant now.

We love the local golf courses too – Lantana Golf Club, Bridlewood, and Grapevine to name a few.

Marty B’s is always a good time too. They have live music and a great outdoor seating area.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There is a famous country song that says, “Behind every man is a good woman, but I think that’s a lie- ’cause when it comes to you I’d rather have you by my side.” I couldn’t live into my life’s purpose without my wife, Danyelle. She works side by side with me both in the home and at work. She’s my office manager, so she keeps everything tied together in the clinic which means we then have the stable platform to do the amazing work for patients that my team and I are capable of.

I also owe a tremendous amount to my pastor, Barrrett Bowden, who encouraged me to define success not as a personal endeavor or a financial one, but a pursuit of God’s calling on my life. We find freedom in submitting to our lives’ purposes. People can think this is restrictive, but I’ve found that that is the exact opposite of what happens. When we know what God created us to do, it’s so freeing because we are no longer subject to the whims and ever-shifting emotions of our egos. I’ve lived that life in my early twenties of pursuing what made me “happy” and found only loneliness and sadness on the other side. Now I pursue both the mission for my life and meaningful relationships with others and my Creator, and that has made all the difference.
