We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Kylie Victoria McBride and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Kylie Victoria, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I have determined that, for me, work-life balance is an illusion. Sometimes my work as a pastor, educator, author, and speaker consumes me entirely. Admittedly, areas such as family, friends, leisure and self-care go lacking during these times. Instead of berating myself for not doing enough of everything for everybody or being everywhere, I have learned to be present where I am. Therefore, if I am working on a book, that project receives my full attention. That means I may not be able to enjoy Saturday brunch with my friends or sit up until midnight watching Law and Order re-runs with my daughter. On the same token, I am intentional about the fifteen minute conversation with my friends, and the one Law and Order re-run that I watch with my daughter. At other times, it might be the reverse, with more time devoted to family, friends, and self-care. This is definitely not balanced in the truest sense of the word. Still, it represents intentionality regarding making space for all aspects of my work and life.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have been blessed to serve my community as an educator, pastor, author, and speaker. While these are distinct areas of service, they intersect at various points. This dynamic allows me to build relationships and impact many different demographics. It is extremely hard work, and I am often tired. I am, however, fulfilled and enjoy engaging with my community. I have learned not to over-promise, which safeguards me from under-delivering. I genuinely want to help everyone, but I have matured enough to know that I cannot save the world. By narrowing my focus and efforts, I can make a more significant impact than achieving partial success in numerous areas. Pieces to Peace, LLC facilitates my work, enabling me to assist people in identifying and implementing strategies necessary for success. Our mantra is: where the pieces come together, and this is precisely what happens through conversation, strategy planning sessions, and a supportive and loving environment.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
If I had to identify a group of people that have supported me throughout the highs and lows, particularly over the last year, it would be my church AITP Ministries in Columbia, South Carolina. 2022 was a difficult year for the ministry, but they rallied around the vision and me as their pastor. Having their support has meant the world to me.
