We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Ketra Davenport-King and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Ketra, how do you define success?
Success looks very different for each person. My definition of success is intrinsic, and it begins with my relationship with God, which guides how I treat people, help people, love my family, and the relationship is my moral compass. Therefore, impact and contribution define success to me – I want to make a positive difference in the lives of those I love and the community. I believe that we should leave a handprint of change in every aspect of our lives. In addition, leaving a legacy for future generations is essential to my success and how I would like those I impacted to remember me.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Dr. Davenport-King’s journey as an advocate began with her own personal experiences. “As an overcomer of childhood sexual abuse, I understand the journey it has taken me to become who I am today. Although the healing process, I believe, is continuous, it has become my mission to advocate for those who cannot find their voice to speak their truth.” This understanding fuels her passion and compels her to be a voice for those who cannot find their own.

Dr. Davenport-King has made significant contributions to the field through her advocacy work. Her approach encompasses not only providing support and empowerment to survivors but also challenging societal norms and systemic issues that perpetuate sexual violence. She believes in the power of education and awareness, breaking down stigmas and fostering a more informed and supportive community. Her work is not just about the immediate impact but also about creating long-lasting change.

One of the key aspects of Dr. Davenport-King’s advocacy is the focus on comprehensive support services. She understands that survivors need more than just emotional support; they also require access to medical assistance, counseling, and legal aid. Dr. Davenport-King works tirelessly to ensure survivors can access these crucial resources, collaborating with organizations providing these services.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As a foodie, I would hit some of my favorite places to eat, like Soiree Coffee Bar, Vault Seafood & Steakhouse, The Finch, Benihana, Perry’s Steak House, Meehan’s Chophouse, RH Rooftop, and Yardbird Table & Bar to name a few. We will also hang out at home, watch movies, catch up, and visit museums and malls. I love good food and unique places with significance, including art and live music.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people who have helped me become who I am today! I want first to give credit to my mother, Carolyn A. Morris; my sister, Nina Morris; my husband, Pastor Willie King; and my children, Keenan and Kennedi (Za’Drianna).
My two special mentors, Dr. Wanda Bolton-Davis and Pastor Phyllis Johnson
