We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Adesuwa Okonedo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Adesuwa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve pretty much had the idea of starting my own practice since the moment I decided that I wanted to become a dentist. I’ve always known that I wanted to be in the health field due to the inspiration of my mother who is a nurse. In 2008, I started shadowing professionals that had various career paths as I tried to chart out the direction of my life. One of the amazing professionals I shadowed was Dr. Judd who had just started her own dental practice at the time. I was amazed by what I saw that week and decided from there that I wanted to not only become a dentist, but also one day own my own dental practice. I am very passionate about the care that I give to my patients. After working for others and practicing in various settings over the years, I felt that the most efficient way to offer my patients the best type of dental care was to start my own dental practice where I could do so on my terms.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am so excited to be opening Panther Creek Dental in the Frisco/Prosper Area in August 2022! It’s been a long road, but I am so thrilled for my team and I to start seeing patients and providing the best dental care to the community. There is a stigma when it comes to visiting the dentist and most people don’t enjoy coming in. We at Panther Creek Dental know this and have taken many steps to make our patient visits as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. Some of the ways we plan on doing this is by incorporating the latest technology in dentistry and really just applying the golden rule to our patients; Truly treating them as we would want to be treated. Our dental office is a judgement free zone. We plan on wowing our patients as soon as they come in. The process of starting Panther Creek Dental has not been easy but has definitely been a rewarding experience. I started the journey 2 years ago in the thick of COVID. I am so proud of how far we have come with it. I have learned the importance of patience and persistence. It took longer than anticipated to really get things started, but during that time I just made the most of it by doing my research, structuring my business plan and really just planning out my vision for the practice instead of getting overly frustrated and anxious. I do have to mention that I also got engaged during this time so I also added wedding planning to my duties. I have been quite busy!
Our brand is unique in that we are a fun-loving, sincere, and a dedicated team that knows how to get the job done. I am very excited to open the doors to Panther Creek Dental so the community of Frisco, Prosper, McKinney and beyond really get to see what we have to offer!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I was born and raised in Maryland until I moved to Dallas a few years ago so I love entertaining friends when they come over to visit! If my best friend was visiting we would have an action packed day. I would first take her to Beyond Pilates to get a good workout in before we see the city. For brunch, I would take her to Snooze AM eatery due to my love of their food. Their pancake flight is to die for. We would then go to the Dallas botanical garden and enjoy the beautiful scenery. I would recommend a nap after because in this life, you have to make time to rest! After that I would take her Six flags over Texas because who doesn’t love a good thrill?! I have visited six flags more times than i would like to admit since moving to Texas. We would then go home, freshen up and head to dinner at the Boiling Crab. It’s almost mandatory to love seafood as a Marylander. I love seafood and the Boiling Crab never disappoints! After this long day of activities I would probably be tired and ready to call it a night but since I want my friend to have a great time I would probably take her out to Legacy Hall to get drinks and listen to some live music. So many entertainment options to choose from in Dallas. The variety of activities is one of the reasons I love the DFW area.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to give a shout out my parents who raised me! They have inspired me to be the woman that I am today. They showed me the significance of hard work, discipline and the importance of community impact. They taught me the golden rule which is the epicenter of how I care for my patients; “Treat every patient as if they were me, my mother, father or anyone of significant importance to me.”
I also want to give shout out my husband (We just got married this Spring!) who has been a very vital element to my story. He has encouraged me to finally start the process and constantly motivates me to pursue my dreams. He has been so helpful along this path to ownership and has been the core of my support system.
I also have to shout out my brothers and dearest friends. It truly does take village, I have been blessed with an amazing support system and would not be on my current path without them.
